Geena’s debut 1980 Records release Modal is an effect-soaked and slow-striding meditation on chance and fate and love and loss. A backwash of ethereal and wispy soundscapes surround this Sheboygan, WI three-piece’s massive sound, dawning peace through distortion and sludge. Geena is a cold and dark forest that opens to pastures where magnificently-crowned elk graze, a slow motion shot of majesty glancing toward the mountains. They play to the heart beat of of a monk in a trance, transcending the pains of the material world. Geena presents us with catharsis, a heavy ooze that inundates us with acceptance. Filled with guitars hitting overdrive and sustained and rounded platforms of bass and expansive drums, haunted with crestfallen vocal melodies that topple over with emotion.
