DJ Quik was discovered by Tweed Cadillac, who asked Quik to be the DJ for Penthouse Players Clique. DJ Quik mainly produces for 2nd II None, Hi-C, AMG, and Suga Free. He was also producing the upcoming Compton phenomenon Mausberg before his untimely death in 2000. DJ Quik's influences are Zapp and Roger, Mixmaster Spade, DJ Pooh, and N.W.A. from his hometown of Compton, CA. Eazy E originally wanted to sign DJ Quik to Ruthless Records, but Profile Records won the bidding war.
For over 25 years, DJ Quik has done Production, Mixing, & Engineering for Eazy E, 2Pac, Erick Sermon, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Nate Dogg, Tony! Toni! Toné!, Tha Dogg Pound, Jodeci, Jon B, Bone Thugs N Harmony, Teena Marie, Snoop Dogg, and many, many, many others. He also worked with Prince. DJ Quik has sold over 200 Million records world wide.
He got his name "Quik" because he is a fast thinker. Also, for his "quick" control as a DJ on the turntables.
His instant legend began with (what would later be called) "The Red Tape". An underground tape, like the many others he was selling in the streets. Except this was his first tape spotlighting his crew, 2nd II None, Hi-C, and AMG. This was also one of the first West Coast underground tapes that publicly named a neighborhood gang affiliation on a recording. His song "The Real Dope" (featuring 2nd II None), is what started the feud between DJ Quik and MC Eiht from CMW.
He has been involved in several feuds, Including Andre 3000, MC Eiht, LL Cool J, Nas and Kanye West.
DJ Quik was a long time Producer and Engineer for Death Row (also consultant to Suge Knight, Quincy Jones) and many other Record Executives and labels.
His son is David Blake II, also a musician and recording artist.
DJ Quik was honored by VH1 with his own "Unsung" episode, and his DVD "Visualism" features all of his earliest videos, live performances and classic interviews.
