Dada Munchamonkey or Ed Ruscha IV, son of well-known (and equally as strange) LA-based artist Edward Ruscha (the third, I'd assume) produces some of the most leftfield experimental music of recent years. Tending not to go for computer sequenced programming Ruscha uses stacks of analogue equipment and performs productions through almost live experimentation. He released numerous cassettes throughout the nineties, some of which fell into Tom Chasteen's hands who then released the first official self-titled Dada Munchamonkey LP through his own label, Exist Dance. That’s the history. The music itself, however, is more difficult to explain. All I can say for sure, without trying to be biased is that it is certainly very unique - Brian Eno on lots of acid. And I mean a ridiculous amount of acid. But that’s only if you want a suitable category. So for me personally speaking I’ll stick to my original “unique” and will add that it’s all very interesting indeed.
