Organiste titulaire de la cathédrale Saint-Louis des Invalides à Paris.
Pierre Gazin is a native Parisian, took his first organ lessons with his mother who was for 52 years an organist in Paris and Nancy. With Jean Langlais and Pierre Cochereau, who often invited him to Notre-Dame de Paris, Pierre Gazin represented the great French organ school. Among Marcel Dupré's and Rolande Falcinelli's last students at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, he was unanimously awarded the first prize for organ and improvisation at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in 1957.
Before being appointed organ teacher at the Metz Conservatory in 1960, he married the Hungarian soprano Maria Posa in Paris. Pierre Gazin's career oscillated between his position as titulaire aux invalides, which he shared with Bernard Gavoty, numerous concerts in Paris, the provinces and abroad, and the organ and writing lessons he gave for nearly 40 years at the Metz Conservatory. There are countless students who have honoured his teaching and collected the best from this courteous, elegant man, a teacher with proverbial patience, human and humanist.
In 1961, Pierre Gazin recorded his first album with Maurice André in St Eustache. In 1969 he recorded Francis Poulenc's organ concerto with the radio chamber orchestra and in 1972 he created Jean Langlais' Concerto in G minor with the same orchestra. In 1975, he founded the "Musical Hours" of the Invalides.
An extraordinary improviser, he was an ardent defender of symphonic organ music of the 19th and 20th centuries. He was often invited to play on the various instruments of the city of Metz, alone or in duet with his wife. A discreet man, few people knew about his career. He was the organist in Abel Gance's films "Austerlitz" and "It's midnight Doctor Schweitzer".
