Surprised to not see any comments for this massively underrated, but still pervasive (Thanks to the enduring power of I Know What Boys Like and Christmas Wrapping), new wave band. Patty Donahue has to be one of the most unique frontwomen in music history. Patty's sarcastic, matter-of-fact vocalizing sounds like the kind of plucky heroine you'd see in a screwball comedy. Musically, The Waitresses were as tight an outfit as you could get. Chris Butler's guitar style owes a lot to ska/2-Tone, but stands on its own in the context of the Waitresses' high-energy music. The rhythm section (comprised of Television alum Billy Ficca on drums and the incredible Tracy Wormworth on bass) simultaneously drive the songs while also playing important roles in the band's overall sound. Add in future Psychedelic Fur Mars Williams on some seriously funky sax and Dan Klayman on jumpy keyboards (usually either piano or combo organ), and you have an immediate recipe for what should have been a bigger group. The Waitresses did manage to score at least 3 lasting songs of note (besides the aforementioned IKWBL and Xmas Wrapping, they also played the theme for the sitcom Square Pegs), one of which is a staple around Christmastime (and it's one of those rare Christmas songs that has a genuine heart behind its lyrics and overall production). Sadly, Donahue's untimely passing in 1996 squashed any chances of a Waitresses reunion for the 21st century and subsequent (and still ongoing) '80s revival. Thankfully, Tracy Wormworth is still busy working with the B-52's, whom I had the pleasure of seeing for my birthday in 2019. The Just Desserts collection is now OOP and commands high prices, so hopefully another Waitresses retrospective on CD will be on tap soon.

My favorite Waitresses songs (I'll add explanations for each choice soon):

1. No Guilt
2. Wise Up
3. Christmas Wrapping
4. I Know What Boys Like
5. Jimmy Tomorrow
