Max Merritt And The Meteors

Profile:

Formed by 15 year old Max Merritt in 1956 in Christchurch NZ, they were one of NZ's earliest Rock'n'Roll bands, and made a name for themselves playing to US servicemen based in that city for Operation Deep Freeze. They signed to HMV in 1959 and recorded an album before moving to Zodiac and Viking. Their early recordings have provided an source of inspiration for several generations of New Zealand garage bands, and are often compiled.

They have recorded continually for over 40 years, recording for at least a dozen labels over the years. Their career took them around the world and by the mid seventies Max was a superstar in Australia and NZ. Dozens of Australasia's most famous musicians have passed through the band's ranks, and despite some health problems they still playing in 2007.
