He studied oboe with Janet Craxton at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and with Maurice Bourgue in Paris. He co-founded The Chamber Orchestra Of Europe in 1981 and was its principal oboist until 2002.
In 2006, he ceased performing on the oboe to focus full-time on his conducting career. He held the positions of Music Director of Manchester Camerata (2001-2011), Principal Guest Conductor of The Colorado Symphony Orchestra (2008-2011), Artistic Partner of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra (2004-2009) and Principal Guest Conductor of City Of London Sinfonia.
He is currently Principal Conductor of Orchester Musikkollegium Winterthur (since the 2009-2010 season) and was also named Artistic Director of Garsington Opera in November 2012.
