A man who could effortlessly flit between technically astounding dance floor smashers and gliding, other-worldly liquid rollers. He was a cornerstone of the immensely important Lifted Music stable and formed my taste for harder dnb with his immaculate Wall of Sound EP as well as the Entrapment single and his feature on the brutal Dirge.

On the lighter side we were given his seminal remix of Just One Second by London Elektricity which imo remains one of the finest liquid anthems of all time, along with the beautiful By The Way on Horizons (without a doubt my personal favourite liquid tune of all time). Then there's Inner Space on Subtitles - perhaps his most essential production, with an atmosphere like no other...rarely have I experienced drum and bass which seems to transcend both the constraints of conventional structure and the realms of time and space...

It's also crucial to address his work with partner in crime Jim Gash as Unknown Error, a team responsible for churning out a myriad of dark techy classics such as their seminal remix of Kryptic Minds and Leon Switch's More Like You on Defcom, Shadows on Hardware, and of course the tearing monster that is Sucker Punch on Lifted. Neither were UE content to be pigeon holed: 2006 gave us the much cited celestial classic - The Yearning on Horizons, reworked in 2008 by Apex himself.

Also let's not forget Space Between with Ayah on Hospital back in 2007, Emo Funk, Falling, and his wonderful Omega Point EP in 2012 (proving that he never lost his touch for ethereal majesty), along with all of his harder tunes such as Breathe, Energy Lines, Fear No Evil...

Basically just listen to his entire discography. This probably doesn't read very coherently, but if I'm honest, no manner of long winded obituary could do this man justice. Music is a personal experience for every one of us and you may disagree, but I really believe that Apex was one of the quiet greats of drum and bass. With his recent releases as Midnight Lamp and Robert Oaks, I was so excited to see what other musical gifts this man had in store for us...it's not fair that he had to die, but that's life I suppose.

His feet lifted from the ground.
RIP Apex.
