Spliff

Profile:
Spliff were a German band founded in 1980. From their second album – when they started using German lyrics – they combined rock music with other styles, especially synth-pop, creating a unique sound and reflecting in a certain way the special atmosphere of the cold war era in 1980s West Berlin, where the band resided. They were quite successful in Germany, charting with a couple of albums and singles. Their greatest hit was "Carbonara", which features on many 80s compilations. In 1985, Spliff disbanded.

Spliff were simply the best german band during die 80's. Their debut album (Spliff Radio Show) is a satirical american AOR-wave-punk-concept-album at it's finest (great musicians). Their other three albums were something completely different: innovative new-wavish rocksounds (great simmons drums, freaky keyboard-tunes) combined with clever lyrics (in german of course). You like the Tubes and Frank Zappa? Go and check out Spliff - and get you a dictionary.

By the way: Their records sound brilliant!
By by the way: The keyboarder (Reinhold Heil) is composer of filmscores in Hollywood.

These guys were Nina Hagen's backing band during her 80's heyday - they released 3 or 4 albums on CBS Germany, but I personally know them for one of the most annoyingly catchy tunes from that decade: "Carbonara". Pseudo-kraut-reggae (Eddy Grant meets Trio, maybe?) extolling the virtues of pasta carbonara. It's been stuck in my head for 2 decades now.
