Freddie Mercury
Real Name:
Farrokh Bulsara (Gujarati: ફરોખ બલ્સારા = Pharōkh Balsārā)
Profile:
Best known as lead singer of popular British rock group Queen. Born 5 September 1946 in Stone Town, Zanzibar, died 24 November 1991 in Kensington, London, UK.
Born as Farrokh Pluto Bulsara to Parsi parents Bomi and Jer Bulsara, he attended St. Peter's boarding school near Bombay and formed his first school band ("The Hectics") where he played piano.
At age 17 the Bulsara family fled to England during the Zanzibar revolution and Freddie (as he began calling himself) took up studies in art design. He also formed a band called "Ibex" (later renamed to "Wreckage") but they failed to take off. Soon after he joined another band called "Sour Milk Sea" but it also disbanded.
In 1970 he met Brian May and Roger Taylor who at the time were going under the name Smile. Quickly taking full charge, he changed the name to "Queen", and with his art design education designed the band's logo. It was also around this time that he changed his name to Frederick Mercury by deed poll.
As flamboyant a performer he was on stage, Mr. Mercury was equally adept at songwriting; it was his "Bohemian Rhapsody" that propelled the band to superstardom.
Between the late 1970's and early 1980's, Freddie took a break from the band to pursue a solo career, spending much time in Munich and New York. In 1987 he was diagnosed with HIV. Despite his illness he still recorded with Queen to finish one last album ("Innuendo") and his last recorded song, "Mother Love" (which was to appear on the posthumous "Made In Heaven" album). As the disease took hold, public appearances and subsequent videos revealed a very thin Freddie -- yet he insisted on keeping his illness a secret.
On 24 November 1991, he died in his Kensington home, one day after announcing his illness, aged 45.

Freddie Mercury was an astonishing performer, brilliant songwriter, and overall genius. His work with Queen and with Montserrat Caballé has stood the test of time and will continue to do so. As a human being, he was, from what I've gathered, kind, generous, loving and exceptionally strong. After getting the AIDS diagnosis in early 1987, which was a death sentence at the time, he continued to work on music for FOUR more years, ultimately completing an album with Montserrat Caballé and two with Queen. In the face of certain death he produced some of the finest work of his entire career.
Freddie Mercury remains one of the greatest singers, songwriters and showmen in all of human history, and he is, rightfully, an inspiration to countless aspiring musicians, myself included.

Freddie was everything. A performer, a strong frontman, If you didn´t like Queen you could easily be influenced by Freddie's radiant persona. You wouldn´t care if he was gay or whatever. Once you heard him, you were sold. Possible one of the most prolific, most stand out performer in music the last 30 years. Few can enchant a stadium of people like he did. Wembley 1985 AND 1986 just shows that. And to this day, he still keep influencing people.
A real legend..

I just have to give my upmost respect to an amazing vocalist that i think, no one has come close to match in terms of singing. I have never been a major fan of Queen but Freddie had an amazing gift, and 'A Kind Of Magic" is my absolute favourite. Just the way he begins that tune is enough and he has you in his pocket right away. But then the tragic desease AIDS took his life in the end.
He truly left a mark upon the world. I never heard to this day anyone who has the voice and brilliance that Freddie Mercury possesed. He litteraly took Queen to his grave because he was all and everything in that band.
