Biography
The duo known as "You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead" was formed in 1994 and was comprised of multi-instrumentalists Jason Reece and Conrad Keely. The two had originally met while living in Hawaii where Reece had made a name for himself by taking first prize in a local "best drummer" competition. Shortly after, Reece and Keely relocated to the indie hotbed of Olympia, Washington, looking to work their way into music. After a series of disappointing results, the pair had quickly had enough of the American Northwest, and opted instead to relocate once more to Austin, Texas and start work on their own project. In time guitarist and notoriously business-savvy friend of the band Kevin Allen was recruited as well as bassist Neil Busch and the "…And" was added to their now famous moniker. Thus, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead came to be.

The group soon became legendary throughout Austin for their virile and anarchic live sets which had a large tendency to end in complete chaos. In early 1998, following the successful issue of a live cassette on the local Garden Hour label, ...Trail of Dead released their self-titled debut on Trance Syndicate Records to mixed critical reception. The record hit the Austin indie scene like a shockwave, however, and carried with it the track "Richter Scale Madness" which remains a fan favorite even today.

In 1999, after the collapse of Trance Syndicate, Trail of Dead moved to Merge Records for the recording of Madonna, which, while not a complete departure from their earlier noise-based art-rock work, silenced much doubt about the band's ability to make something more commercially viable. Yet the biggest leap in the band's success didn’t come until 2001 when they were signed by Interscope Records and released their most critically acclaimed and widely accepted album to date, Source Tags & Codes.

Shortly before their 2005 release, Worlds Apart, ...Trail of Dead suffered its first casualty at the hands of success in the somewhat mysterious departure of Neil Busch. While there was much speculation about drug abuse as cause, it was never officially reported either way as to the reasons why Busch chose to leave when he did. He was quickly replaced on bass by Danny Wood of The Rise.

Forget Cassettes drummer Doni Schroader was added to the line-up as a second percussionist during what was intended to be the national tour in support of Worlds Apart (which, three weeks before the tour began, was bumped back by Interscope.) The band saw fit to take him on full-time to help replicate live what Reece had been doing in the studio.

Worlds Apart was finally released and greeted with much controversy over the delays, lackluster sales despite huge critical acclaim, and a backlash from fans over the drastic change in direction. Keely has been quite vocal about his displeasure over the handling of the album by Interscope in recent years, so much so that he spent some time threatening to disband the group.

In 2006, with the future of the band still in question, Keely and the now five-piece Trail of Dead chose to channeled their frustration into their newest album, So Divided, (which was originally slated as an EP) rather than part ways and have since maintained a regular touring schedule.
