System of a Down, sometimes shortened to System and abbreviated as SOAD, is an Armenian-American heavy metal band from Glendale, California, formed in 1994. The band currently consists of Serj Tankian (lead vocals, keyboards), Daron Malakian (vocals, guitar), Shavo Odadjian (bass, backing vocals) and John Dolmayan (drums).

The band achieved commercial success with the release of five studio albums, three of which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. System of a Down has been nominated for four Grammy Awards, and their song "B.Y.O.B." won the Best Hard Rock Performance of 2006. The group went on hiatus in August 2006 and came together again in November 2010, embarking on a tour for the following three years. System of a Down has sold over 40 million records worldwide, and two of their singles, "Aerials" and "Hypnotize", reached number one on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart.

I'm not a fan of nu metal. I think the mix of metal and hip-hop styles is very awkward and they should stay as their own genres. However, System of a Down are one of the very few bands within the genre in which, to me, seemed to get it right. They sound the most metallic of all the nu metal bands while having the rap-influenced vocals (Serj Tankian can be impressive on many songs) but they also show influences of progressive and thrash metal, along with the native sounds of their country of ancestry, Armenia. Many of their songs focus on thought-provoking subjects like political corruption ("P. L. U. C. K." and "Holy Mountains" spread awareness of the Armenian Genocide while "B. Y. O. B." attacks the Iraq War) and flaws of science ("Science"). Sometimes, they can be humorous and talk about whatever the hell the want ("Bounce", "Chic 'N' Stu", "This Cocaine Makes Me Feel Like I'm on This Song"). If you avoided this band because of their association with nu metal, I say give them a chance anyway because of how different they are from other bands in the genre. This isn't another Limp Bizkit or KoЯn. This is System of a Down.

A friend who lives in L.A. & has visited Greece for vacation in 1997 summer & told me: "Man, there is a band now in L.A. area who is incredible. Forget about the old thrash or nu-metal, System Of A Dawn their name & is a very killer band! Watch out for their music!" Finally after 5-6 years their music had reached in Greece....Always late Greece....
