Rollo has always been a mild fascination of mine. Depending on who you believe, he's either a genius or a moron. Some paint a picture of a quiet man with synaesthesia who rarely goes clubbing and 'prefers to let the music do the talking'. Yet other times he appears so passionate and mildly deluded that you can't shut him up.

Rollo's career famously ignited after remixing Felix's 'Don't You Want Me', securing that dark, haunting organ sound and bouncy bassline he was known for in the 90s. His collaborations with Sister Bliss were filled with catchy riffs, camp vocals and big breakdowns. He was to hardbag what Ferry Corsten was to euro trance.

Yet I get the sense the Rollo-Sister Bliss relationship was built a lot on friendship and somewhat on tolerance; I always envisaged Rollo running around the studio creating monster tracks while Bliss calmly followed him round keeping everything working properly. 'Plagiarism is the key' he told Muzik Magazine in 1996, shamelessly admitting to ripping off the hooks and beats of classic house tracks to make his own. The tables were turned however, when Sash! released 'Encore Une Fois', a track suspiciously similar to Faithless' 'Insomnia'. Rollo wasn't quite so chuffed then.

Along with the boastful liner notes of 'Reverence' claiming Rollo is a member of Mensa who can write upside down and back to front, I can't help thinking he'd be a person I'd avoid in real life if he got chatting to me in the pub. But as far as geniuses go, he's certainly one of the most eccentric and compelling producers out there, at least during the 90s. One Tribe, Faithless, OT Quartet, Rollo Goes... These songs are classics, and if they aren't the sign of a legend I'm not sure what is.
