Brazilian Latin jazz vocalist, born on March 6, 1942 in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil, whose work spans the 1970s to the present. Married Brazilian drummer & percussionist Airto Moreira in 1972. Their daughter Diana Moreira Booker is also a singer.
Flora Purim is/was most famous for her Vocals for the Chik Corea Project "Return To Foreve"r . There she added her playful and optimistic flavour on Songs as the classic "What Game Shall We Play Today" on the 1972 selftitled debut album "Return To Forever" a milestone in the combination of Jazz / Rock with popular music... The Return To Forever personal was an all-star line-up including the Brazilian Flora Purim (till 1974)+ her husband Airto Moreira on percussion . In 1974tshe released her first international released Solo album. A 5 year jail sentence for trafficking Cocaine stopped her from becoming a more known artist. But she still stayed busy in the Jazz Scene and toured Solo or with her husband and with countless other formations . Recently she took a pretty successful sidestep to the World Music market and co-operated with London Drum 'n Bass artists Marc & Dego of 4 Hero and Bill Laswell , just to name a few. Her voiv´ce is still immediately recognizable. She sings proper english songs, but her real strength are those brazilian Songs , where she leaves behind all conventional arrangements or melodies and lets her voice flow free to make the most astonishing sound ! Thus reminding of the incredible use of percussions by Airto Moreira, who sometimes made Solo Shows with selfmade percussion instruments in the shape of fantasy animal sculptures , where each "bone" is tuned in a special note.
