At the age of eight, he started playing piano and soon thereafter started playing the guitar. He joined his first band, Darkchilde, in middle school and went to college at the University of South Carolina, majoring in computer programming.In the late 90's, he, Mitch James, and Brian Geiger started a band called The Nothing, later renamed Sugardaddy Superstar. Soon after, Sugardaddy Superstar began to record their own music in a studio (which the band called Sugarstar Studios) built in Sloan's home. The group was signed by Columbia Records and changed their name to Crossfade. They released Crossfade in 2004. Two years later, Crossfade released another album called Falling Away.
