Canadian military doctor and artillery commander Major John McCrae (b. Guelph, Not. 30 Nov. 1872 - d. Boulogne, France 28 Jan. 1918) became famous for his poem “In Flanders Fields” inspired by the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer.
