I've been a fan of Coldcut's cut and paste, mix and scratch mayhem since first tuning into Kiss Fm back in 1987. The late eighties saw massive interest with ' Rare Groove' in the UK, and one club/cultural centre in London's Covent Garden ' The Africa Centre' was at the storefront of this movement! Jonathan More's Meltdown being one such funky night. When Kiss went legal on the 1st of September 1990 Coldcut were given a regular slot ' Solid Steel' usually after Sarah HB. Their shows/mixes were a clash of spoken word, world music and all things inbetween, one show in particular that i remember featured ' Orson welles war of the worlds,Chaba Fadela from the Bad Influence soundtrack, Acid House flashbacks, Somebody talking about LSD ( maybe Timothy Leary?) and a psychedelic soundbite about the dangers of Drugs! Saturday night on the ' Wheels of Steel' were never so thrilling! Later on Coldcut shifted gear with the BBC, still 'Solid Steel' but with like-minded guests such as Strictly Kev and other ninja tune luminaries. One such mix blended ' Wevie Stonder with CCS, The Glitter Band and Talking Heads, not forgetting ' Lalo Schifrin's Ape Shuffle' On Coldcut's Planet Of The Apes Special!

Ever since Grandmaster Flash unleashed "The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel" on an unsuspecting world in 1981, hip-hop´s cut 'n' paste method of collage has been just about the only musical style worth a damn.
With the possible exception of Double Dee & Steinski and avant garde pranksters like Negativland and Stock, Hausen and Walkman, no one has done more to bring the mix'n'scratch style out of hip-hop#s occasionally self-enforced ghetto more than Coldcut.
