With his uncanny ability to mix and tweak records for maximum emotional impact on the dance floor, Rick Gianatos pioneered the concept of a (re-)mix in the mid 1970s.

Just take a look at his vast and unbelievable repertoire of captivating production and mixing work, and you understand why anyone must consider Mr. Gianatos as perhaps one of the very best studio wizards of the Disco era.

There are of course numerous examples of Mr. Gianatos' outstanding work. But there is one mix in particular, in which he simply outdid himself - I am referring to his magical 1979 rework of El Coco's "Afrodesia".

This particular remix of “Afrodesia” is unlike anything else I have heard before. It is so subtle and airy but nevertheless full of energy at the same time, whereby Mr. Gianatos still managed to stay true to the original classic track by the way…

I would even go as far as claiming that Rick Gianatos’ "Afrodesia" version could have served as a quintessential blueprint for any artists’ remixing project thereafter. It is a prime example for showcasing how any post-production work should be done right!

Anyway, it is obvious that Rick Gianatos has a wonderful gift to create a sound that at once is retro and futuristic. More examples needed? Well, let me do the cherry-picking for you:

Air Power “Be Yourself”
The Gap Band “Baby Baba Boogie” (OMG! That break!)
Madelaine “I Love Makin' Love To You”
Charo “Stay With Me”
Solar Source “Can You Dig The Funk”

And the list goes on and on… Especially with his very own original production work as well as his fantastic editing of dance classics on his Disco Queen Records label. Wow!!!

IMHO it is about time and actually way overdue that the dance music community pays tribute to this master producer and remixer who gave us so much joy with his music.

How about a full, stand-alone Rick Gianatos comp? Strutt? Soul Jazz? BBE?

Mr. Gianatos is still producing some of the best disco music today - using the formula of "vocalist first", an element which made disco music a big success.

Thank you, Mr. Gianatos.
