We™ didn't invent jungle - but they took the genre to places no one else has reached before or since. In fact they almost spoil the genre for you (and I listen to a lotta jungle). Yes, the dub, hip-hop and breakbeat influences are there, but genres and samples from cultures all over the globe, shimmering ambience, highly complex and constantly shifting polyrhythmic arrangements that transition through multiple tempo changes per track, all take center stage instead of a sampler running through Amen break variations. We™ were musicologists and travelers, not merely guys with a sampler. They threw their own parties, which wow I envy anyone who went, because the vibe in We™'s music is unlike anything in jungle music. These days there is a jungle revival going on. And yet nothing coming out (and there's a ton of good stuff coming out) is as original as We™. Probably reprints and rediscovery are in order so jungle music can continue to innovate, this is the blueprint... "Magnesium Flares" remains my pick for best jungle track of all time.
