This 2016 pressing by Music On Vinyl is the one. Absolutely a masterpiece elevated to status of art. Superb remastering with dynamic sound qualities. Sounds like you're in the studio with Miles. 'Live Evil' is a head trip; mind blowing jazz fusion from early 1970, following the revolutionary classic Bitches Brew. Miles leads an all star line-up including John McLaughlin, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Airto and Wayne Shorter. Holy hell, it's Miles at his peak.

Top notch Miles. Yes, sound quality is very dated, especially the ground noise on the guitar but it adds personality. The japanese folks really know how to do a reissue. the 7 inch size with all the SQ LP inserts and the metallic foil cover are spectacular, definitely worth the extra cost. As for the transfer, it could not be better; if there was any noise reduction , it was done very sparingly.

Gary Bartz did an interview which finally cleared up the mystery of the final track
Its a band recording made from the stage by either Gary, Keith or Jack sometime in 1971.
Miles heard them playing it on the tour bus, and liked what he heard so much that he took the tape to Teo Macero who was putting together the album and asked him to include it on the album.
on some reissues this segment has been smothered in noise reduction but the MOV LP 1483 sounds excellent
its a tribute to Miles that he spotted the value of this piece of live music for what it was and wasn't hung up on the rough nature of the recording.
and its a tribute to Teo that he skillfully wove it into the fabric of the album.

excellent pressing, this is my go to version now.
the Legacy CD sounded disjointed but this version is great, despite the various sources used to compile this album it sounds cohesive

Any comments on the quadrophonic mix of this masterpiece?
I'm new to miles I arrived via the post punk route. I've always favoured live albums and the day this arrived I just couldn't stop playing it and now I see its influence everywhere , PiL's Paris Au Printemps, Jah wobble's Largely live in...(I forget where) etc etc
I really admire the way Miles got some primitive Punky proto-Keith Levene tones out of a pro like John McLaughlin. (See the outtakes Duran & Johnny Bratton on YouTube for the most hardcore examples)

I love Pangea, Agharta, Black Magus, but they're a different animal entirely. ( i hated the low quality badly recorded "in concert" , it was like listening through a keyhole)Nervous newcomers dipping a toe in these waters should start with the more accessible Live Evil and be bowled over by the exuberance of the live material.
If this show inspires you to go on to collect other shows just be aware that December 19th and Feb 21st are the only 1970 shows with guitar.
Miles finally added a permanent live guitarist ( then a second , then a third!) From 1972 but by then the music was totally different and much darker. So Live Evil is Utterly Unique capturing a unique moment of musical discovery for Miles and his band, how many Live Albums can say that?

if Live Evil is in your top 10 albums its worth picking this up and i think its a safe bet that it won't be superceded by some new remaster anytime soon. Sadly there's no more Miles albums with existing 70's Quad mixes left to reissue and probably no will or budget to create more.
