Uriah Heep's 2002 live DVD Gypsy captures a one-hour concert from 1985 at the Camden Palace in London. It was filmed for the Live from London television show. Joining lead guitarist and bandleader Mick Box in the lineup are former Trapeze lead vocalist Peter Goalby, keyboardist/vocalist John Sinclair, bass guitarist/vocalist Trevor Bolder, and drummer Lee Kerslake (just about five years removed from his work with Ozzy Osbourne on the seminal Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman albums). Uriah Heep was touring to promote the new album Equator. The quintet had streamlined its sound in recent years on albums such as 1982's Abominog and 1983's Head First. The progressive rock leanings were jettisoned in favor of the tighter mainstream hard rock and heavy metal of the time. It paid off, and Abominog performed rather well on the charts. Seven of the 12 songs come from Abominog, Head First, and Equator; "Sell Your Soul," "The Other Side of Midnight," "Rockarama," and "That's the Way That It Is" are the best of these selections. Band classics include "Stealin'," "The Wizard," "Gypsy," "Easy Livin'," and "Look at Yourself." Sometimes Goalby's vocals don't carry the dramatic weight that the late David Byron, Uriah Heep's original vocalist, brought to the songs. It's a nice touch, however, when Goalby dedicates "The Wizard" to Byron. This DVD features journalist and broadcaster Dave Ling providing an introduction and track-by-track audio commentary. Gypsy isn't definitive Uriah Heep by any means, but it does showcase many of the band's best traits, such as Box's aggressive guitar riffing.
