Brian Eno

Bürgerl. Name:
Brian Peter George St John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno
Profil:
Brian Eno is an electronic musician and producer. Also known for his multifaceted interests outside of music, especially technological. He was born 15 May 1948 in Woodbridge, Suffolk, UK.

He attended Ipswich and Winchester Arts Schools where he studied with Tom Phillips (3), Roy Ascott, Christian Wolff, Anthony Benjamin, Noel Forster and George Brecht.

Starting his musical career early, first thing of note being with the band Roxy Music, Eno has gone on to produce a number of highly eclectic and increasingly ambient electronic and acoustic albums, and also works frequently as producer for many popular artists.

He is widely cited as coining the term "ambient music", with his series of albums using the term recorded between 1978 and 1982.

He collaborated with David Byrne, formerly of Talking Heads, on "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" (1981) which was one of the first albums not in the rap or hip-hop genres to extensively feature sampling.
Eno collaborated with David Bowie as a writer and musician on Bowie's influential "Berlin Trilogy" of albums, "Low" (1977), "Heroes" (1977), and "Lodger" (1979), on Bowie's later album, "1. Outside - The Nathan Adler Diaries: A Hyper Cycle" (1995), and on the track "I'm Afraid Of Americans" (1997).
He has also collaborated with Robert Fripp of King Crimson, Robert Wyatt on his "Shleep" (1997) album, with Jon Hassell and with the German duo Cluster.

Eno is also well known for acting as a producer for a number of bands, these include U2, James, Coldplay, et al. He won the Best Producer award at the 1994 and 1996 BRIT awards. He is an innovator across many fields of music and collaborated on the development of the Koan algorithmic music generator. He has also been involved in the field of visual arts.

In 1996 Brian Eno, and others, started the Long Now Foundation to educate the public into thinking about the very long term future of society. Brian Eno is also a columnist for the British newspaper, The Observer.

Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2019 as a member of Roxy Music.

Waiting for a vinyl repress for years, this could fit easily on a double LP.

Thank you Brian Eno you have been a busy boy! I first heard Brian Eno through the first two Roxy albums, an artist I was friendly with introduced me to his early solo work and his collaborations with Robert Fripp and the ambient music he went on to pioneer. I love his Before and After Science album and his production work with Talking Heads, U2 and many others. It is worth exploring the Eno world of print also and his interviews such as Desert Island Discs give us an insight to this remarkable artist and all-round good egg. Thanks again Brian for the fun also.

I agree with the general sentiments expressed below. I first encountered his work through the Talking Heads collaborations, when I was an undergraduate. Definitely expands the possibilities of what music is and what it can do. The greatist artists create new space that makes creation by others possible - Brian Eno clearly meets that bar.

My musical taste, & daresay life changed, when I heard 'Another Green World' when it was released. Fortunately.

If you don't like Brian Eno, I feel sorry for you. From Another Green World to Before and After Science, the Ambient series, Apollo (my personal favorite), and the many more before and after, Eno's discography testifies to his musical genius.

Quite simply, a genius, that word is all too lightly bandied around today but if any one person falls into that category, its Eno.
From Another Green World, Music For Films, My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts, his true Ambient albums, On Land, Airports, Apollo, through to his masterly productions of Bowie, Iggy, U2 etc. The man puts you in an entirely different headspace each time you listen and his music is truly timeless. I have a very wide musical palate, from folk to heavy metal to industrial indie to experimental jazz rock to pop and Eno is the one of the few who's music you can go back to time and time again and still hear it differently. From an output spanning nigh on fifty years, that is a remarkable achievement.

Interesting to note that Brian Eno apparently did several film soundtracks that don't appear to have been released on vinyl or CD. This evening I settled down to watch a film called "Land Of The Minotaur" (AKA "The Devil's Men") and as I was watching the opening credits I was sure I had seen his name flash by, so I backed up the DVD and played that bit again and sure enough, he did the soundtrack...it's wonderfully sinister and unmistakably Eno....and once I knew he was the artist I certainly paid much more attention to the music than I probably would have otherwise.

I have heard reviewers who were critical of Brian Eno's works claim that they were essentially just elevator music or mood music. And I must say, they are completely and totally correct. And that's what makes Eno so great. The fact that in a genre of music not intended to stand out, Brian Eno somehow manages to stand out is a testament to his genius. He is the king of ambient music. His columnism under the name C. S. J. Bofop (B. R. I. Aneno) says it all. "You may not notice it changing. But you will notice it not getting boring." You have to listen to him at least once in your lifetime, if you can. Try it, you'll like it.

Brian Eno is quite simply a genius. A master of ambience. I never fully appreciated his work until 20 or so (30 in some cases) years after its release. Any artist that produces music that stands the test of the time deserves the highest of accolades. His ambient work is simply timeless, sounds which get better with age. Take time to absorb his work fully.
