German label.
Label Code: LC 3230 / LC 03230.
Pioneer German label in electronic music and krautrock, established by A&R men Bruno Wendel and Günter Körber in late-1971 as a co-release label in partnership with Metronome. In 1974 Körber left to set up his own Sky Records. The management then changed with Brain being bought over as a Metronome sub-label.
The first releases [1001 to 1091] in the 1000 series, as well as 5 releases in the 60.000 series [60.007, 60.008, 60.009, 60.010 and 60.019] and one sampler with number 888 had the green Brain label. Originals of 1001 to 1055 had a slightly darker green color than the second editions and original editions of 1056 to 1091. Also the first pressings of 1001 to 1055 have "Metronome" written on the label below the Brain logo (1972 - 1974). If this is text is missing, then the record is a repressing from 1974 or later.
The second Green Brain no longer uses the Metronome logo (1974 - 1976). You will find this one on all remaining Brain 1000 numbers and on the earliest Brain 60.000's. Brain 1001 - 1055 pressings with this label are mid-1970s reprints.
The third variation (1977 - 1980) is usually referred to as orange or Multicolour Brain. It was used for the remainder of the 1970s.
The plain black label (1980 - ) was the standard Brain label for the 1980s. Many of the early releases have been reissued with this label.
Please enter catalogue numbers with label first followed by cover variations, plus Metronome where the Brain metronome logo appears.
Scorpions Germany’s rock sensation first album “Lonesome Crow” was a recording they won in Hanover at a festival band completion with a contract at Brain a sublabel of Metronome In Hamburg, Germany. This sparked the bands career into a 50 year legacy selling over 100 million albums. (Scorpions. Biography. 2015 “Forever And A Day”) Rolling Stone described the Scorpions as "the heroes of heavy metal". MTV called them "Ambassadors of Rock". Ich fühle und weine, wenn ich ihre Musik höre. Perfekt hervorragend!

Notes: Original 1st press Brain CD issues started in late 1983. Early 1983-85 issues mimicked the black Brain LP label. 1985 and later issues are generally silver disc with black print only. The style of disc pressing "silver to centre" flat discs (with no stacking ring) continued to 1993. There may well be pressing variations within that period that we don't know about.
1988+ pressings some earlier discs (with standardised design) were repressed with better artwork, CD production was upped beyond the dozen or so to 30+ over the next 5 years.
1980s 2CD sets came in "fat boy" multiboxes. Later issues came in slim "brilliant box" cases. Some Repertoire CD reissues replicated the Green Brain label (and invented some new variations). Universal & Revisited reissues used beige background on most labels.
All known Brain CD's have barcodes
A lot of disc type rules 1-4+6 apply to other German Polygram/Phonogram/Universal labels Please post any updates/corrections to: ultimathulerecords
I decided to do this after I came across so many things that were wrong and got fed-up with having to explain things over and over again. If you know any extra points that I should add, or something I don't know, then I'm eager to learn!
