The Shadows Of Knight – Gloria

Dunwich 666, perhaps my favorite catalog number ever, belongs to The Shadows of Knight's debut album Gloria. This is without a doubt one of the essential albums in the garage canon and an absolute stomper from back to front. The title track is the obvious classic, but other highlights are Oh Yea (collectors should note that included on this pressing is an alternate mix without the extra guitar overdubs of the single mix), Light Bulb Blues, I Got My Mojo Working, and the sleaze classic; It Always Happens That Way. This album and the band's second LP outing, Back Door Men, are prime 60s fuzzed out garage classics. Combining the style of the Yardbirds and Stones with the grit of Chicago blues, the Knight's brought the British invasion full circle with this album being their response proving they could cover classic Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, and Muddy Waters with the same firey intensity seen across the pond. Be sure to listen to both albums in mono for the maximum amount of power in the grooves.

Essential 60’s garage rock with the best version of Gloria ever! Worth seeking out a vg+ or better copy. Curious how the mono sounds..

The Shadows of Knight are primarily known for the garage classic "Gloria", but this album illustrates quite well why they were considered for a time the 'american Rolling Stones' as the band rocked old blues numbers with tight arrangements and blistering lead guitar(s). Their "Oh Yeah" reinvents the old Bo Diddley classic, and "Light Bulb Blues" is IMHO a better rocker than "Gloria". They eventually lost their way, but this album, and their follow-up, "Back Door Men" are excellent.
