Alice Coltrane Featuring Pharoah Sanders – Journey In Satchidananda

A wondrous journey to a distant land, Alice and Pharaoh have achieved something special in this musical suite. The grooves are rhythmic, beginning sparsely and building in complexity and density. Harp and oud add an exotic flavor. The bass and drums are locked into a pulse throughout.

I'm so accustomed to Rudy Van gelder mixes, so this one is very different and very pleasing. There is a great deal of high sparkle, allowing the droning sounds to fill the upper register. Soloists are boosted when it's their turn to blow. Amazing bass solo on B1.

This acoustic sounds reissue includes a heavy tip-on gatefold jacket with glossy sides, rice paper lined inner sleeve, and pristine glossy vinyl. There is no detectable crackle nor extraneous sounds, but some bleed is evident between tracks. An aural treat. Buy it.

I did an A:B comparison of this release to the US version which was cut by RKS at Sterling sound. The difference was not insignificant.

Horrendous print quality of the digipak cover; pixelated text, weird colours on the front cover, booklet and CDs are fine but the digipak looks like a bootleg.

Worth Every damn cent. There is nothing more to say, simply fabulous!!!!

Purchased this copy used, not long after it was reissued in 1997. Really glad I grabbed a copy back then. I paid $11 for it at Reckless Records, Chicago, at the time.

It's a proper deluxe edition. Worth every cent. Definitive version

t would be interesting to learn where John Coltrane's musical and spiritual development would go. This could be one of the possible ways. Coltrane's second wife picks up where her husband left off. Despite the studio origin, the songs, except for the last one, have a live performance. Individual instruments gradually join or leave the bass rhythm. They thus create a sound surface that reminds me of a river with connecting tributaries to eventually dissolve in the delta. Sanders humbly completes the painting as a picturesque meditative whole. This "economical" edition of the classic album really succeeded, and so it can easily fulfill the purpose of the definitive one from the point of view of sound quality. I highly recommend it.

Never had a record sound so clean. Top quality pressing of a classic record.
