- I just did a shootout with a '72 US vs the Mobile Fidelity one. I've had both since new. The MF has way more dynamic range than the '72 to me.
- I've got like 8 copies of Ziggy, including the Dynaflex, 6e/4e, 1e/2e, Ryko, 40th Anniversary...there are a few correct answers I'd say for "best one". 6e/4e & 40th both have this great rock power, great drums, sound hot. This one though, while maybe a bit more clinical is an amazing deep dive for anyone that wants a huge soundstage and separation. This is a very revealing version which I always go back to, despite usually recommending 6e/4e when asked
- God knows how people think this is the best there is, it's average at best. Very brittle. 2012 LP trounces this hands down.
- I've heard the (possibly dubious) claims about MFSL smiley facing the EQ when mastering. While listening to my MFSL vinyl and comparing to a high quality rip of the original UK vinyl, I notice a difference that could be interpreted as a smiley face EQ on the MFSL, however I submit that perhaps the opposite has happened: to me, it sounds like the UK vinyl has some midrange boost (frowny face EQ??). IMO, the MFSL has much more natural, laid back quality, a less in-your-face sound. Of course I have no idea which would be "most faithful" to the master tapes (regardless of the MFSL "Original Master Recording" provenance) but I certainly prefer the sound on the MFSL. Whatever your preference, the MFSL really is a fabulous sounding disc and of course sounds best when PLAYED AT MAXIMUM VOLUME
- I bought this in 1983 new for $15 which at the time was a lot for a lp. First time I heard of MOFI. I always loved the sound of this album loud on my Altec A7 Voice of the Theatre speakers. The 40th anniversary release is also a worthy version to have. RIP David Bowie
