Over the years I've owned a few different pressing of this LP;
- 1967 Canadian stereo mix on Island (black labels).
- 1967 UK mono mix on Island (pink labels).
- 1971 German stereo mix re-issue on Island (palm tree/pink rim).
- 1975 UK mono mix re-issue on Island (palm tree/pink rim)
Great late 60's psychedelic pop rock, with some nice R&B twists here and there. They present us with a couple covers as well;
"What's That Sound" aka "For What It's Worth", original penned by Stephen Stills while with Buffalo Springfield. Oddly, the song is credited to "Mills", at least it appears this way on the German copy I have in my hand. Possibly a typo...or some sort of inside joke? Had Jimmy Page been in this band I may have screamed... PLAGIARISM!!...but thankfully he's not. The other cover is an up-tempo slightly heavier rendition of the Young Rascals "Come On Up"...love the crunching power chords provided by the then 16 year old Luther Grosvenor.
The remainder of the songs are group compositions...all excellent I might add. The young talent was more than evident within this precursor to Spooky Tooth.
Anyone who owns any of the stereo mixes, and listened to them closely should be aware these are not "proper" stereo mixes, but rather mono-enhanced stereo...despite the fact that the labels clearly say "Stereo". Not entirely bad, as the sound quality is still quite good all things considered.
I've included a video featuring four of my favourite cuts ripped from my German pressing. My video is featured on the album's release page here at Discogs.
