Expectations post-Endtroducing were too high for this to be anything but a disappointment at the time (sans Rabbit). That said, flash foward 20 years and call this a Gorillaz album: people would be flippin' out.

Best album ever made. No exaggeration. The quality reflects the effort that went into it. Heard it in 1998 when it came out and still to this day haven't heard anything better. I can't imagine how difficult this was to make given they used the best and different person for each accompaniment on each track. Thom York, DJ Shadow, Mike D, Kool G Rap, London Symphony Orchestra and the list goes on. If you include all the samples used, it goes on forever. I've never heard an album do so many different genre's of music in one album and have each of the tracks be essentially the best I've ever heard for that genre. If you ever opened an album and wanted to be surprised and entertained by each track. This is it

Randomly found a sealed copy of this in Davis, California yesterday. Is this some sort of a reissue, or are there really just brand new copies of this still floating around?

I bought this album in HMV on Oxford St, London when it was released. It was sealed (don't know if it was factory or retailer sealed) with the HMV price sticker on the outside. Bought it, got it home, opened it, and inside the centre gatefold cover booklets to my surpsrise I find Sharpie tagged autographs penned (purportedly/presumably) by Mr Lavelle and Mr Davis. That was unexpected and kinda awesome but what was even more interesting was that both autographs were dedicated to a DJ Sabre. I can't remember the exact wording of the dedications (having not pulled this album out of the archive for a reeeeeally long time) and I'm not near home right now to check them but there were two seperate autographs from James Lavelle and DJ Shadow, both dedicated to somebody known (in 1998) as DJ Sabre. I'm not expecting any reply to this post but if anybody ever reads this who has any information regarding who DJ Sabre is and how their signed, dedicated, "mint" copy of the limited edition version of this album wound up sealed and for sale in HMV* I would love to know (and to be honest, if they wanted it back I wouldn't mind parting with it as, apart from Celestial Annihilation and Rabbit In Your Headlights I don't remember anything on this album grabbing me in any way, and I have Rabbit... on 12").

So, if there's anybody out there who is now or ever was known as DJ Sabre and who had this version of this release signed by the men from UNKLE in '98 before it got resealed and found its way onto the racks in HMV then holla.

*for anybody who doesn't know and remotely cares, HMV was a major high street music and entertainment retailer in the U.K. and further afield which is now almost finished but which in its day was a significant institution. The Oxford St branch where I bought this was for some time the largest music and entertainment outlet in the world (by size or square footage or metric tonnage or some shit like that). My point is that they don't and as far as I know never did any trade in used vinyl; everything came straight from the distro's and the whole operation was super corporate so finding this there was completely unexpected and bizarre in a way that finding it in a record exchange or 2nd hand vinyl outlet (even sealed) totally wouldn't have been.

Nice artwork and packaging, shame about the content. I found this LP to be a bit of a dissapointment.
Firstly, and I mean the first track, Guns Blazing. I love the instrumental which featured in the promo video of 'Guns Blazing'. This is an amazing track (despite the seeminly bad production) but without the rap! Sorry Kool G but you aint really cutting it here.
Secondly, being a massive early Verve fan, I kind of expected miracles from Ashcroft but the track does not sit well at all. Its forced and kind of sounds like Richard has tried to make a track that sums him up but couldn't be bothered to write something that went with the beat. The result is a track that attempts to fit all the words of the song into the rhythm with succeeding. Weve heard it before anyway and a million times better on 'A Northern Soul' .
The track with Ian Brown is superb so what did they do to the LP - took the vocals off! Why?
I have to say, the only real saving grace here is Thom Yorke on Rabbit in Your Headlights. Oh, left the vocals on that one. Tom do you a cheap deal did he?
The rest? Well, listen for yourself and see if you can pull out any hidden gems I may have missed. Good luck but I wanna swear!
