Twin Atlantic – GLA

GLA is a real mixed bag. The album starts and ends real strong, but it gets quite forgettable when you reach the midway point of this album. The songs seem to blend into one because they seem a little bit too similar to each other. The song writing throughout the album is very hit and miss. The songs No Sleep and Whispers are highly contrasting in the in the lyrical department. The latter being the well writren track. The opening track Gold Elephant: Cherry Alligator, despite being a good opening track, the ending is seriously abrupt. If it's your first time listening to the track, you'll end up thinking that you've got a problem with your record/CD or something. No. It just ends really abruptly. It is a good track regardless though. No Sleep (despite the not-so-good lyrics) is a super catchy, arena-ready anthem, which will be a definite crowd pleaser. From here on (with the exception of Ex El) the album gets a little forgettable and not as enjoyable as the albums opening tracks. Ex El and Whispers may be a little bit too drawn out for what they are but, regardless, I do enjoy those tracks. A Scar to Hide is probably one of the more emotional tracks on the LP. Sam's vocals sound really nice on this track. The closing tracks end this album on a real high. The Chaser is a nice little throwback to old school Twin Atlantic with a catchy chorus and is one of the more memorable tracks off the LP. The album ends on Mother Tongue which is a simple track in general, but is still a pleasing listen and a satisfying way to end the bands 4th LP. Overall, my favourite tracks are No Sleep, Ex El, Whispers, A Scar to Hide, The Chaser and Mother Tongue. My least favourites were You Are the Devil, Valhalla, I Am Alive and Missing Link, solely on the grounds of not being memorable enough and that brings down the album quite a lot. I'd rate this album a 7/10.
