How To Turn Your Discogs Wantlist Into A Holiday Gift Guide
Share your Discogs Wantlist and the releases you want most by following these simple steps.
If you’re a music collector, your seasonal wish lists most likely include a few records, CDs, or cassettes. You might also have your eye on specific versions of releases, and it can be difficult to ensure the right pressings end up in your hands for the holidays.
With the Discogs Wantlist, you can easily share the releases you’re most excited about with loved ones to create a helpful holiday gift guide. Below, you’ll find a short list of tips on how to make the most of your Wantlist and share the tremendous gift of music.
Here’s how to turn your Discogs Wantlist into the perfect holiday gift guide.
Share Your Wantlist Online
One of the easiest ways to share a record shopping list is to provide a direct link to your Discogs Wantlist. To do this, you’ll need to make sure that your Wantlist is viewable by others.
To check or update your settings, simply log into your Discogs account, select the Account dropdown in the top right corner, select “Settings,” and click on “Privacy.”
Under basic privacy settings, you’ll see a checkbox with the phrase “Allow others to browse my wantlist.” Checking this box will enable you to share your Wantlist via a single URL.
When updating this setting, don’t forget to click the “Save my privacy settings” button.
Once you know your settings are updated, all you have to do is copy the URL that appears when you’re viewing your Wantlist and paste it in an email, text, or direct message.
Sharing this URL allows recipients to see your entire Wantlist, click on individual releases, or browse via the “Show Items in Marketplace” button in the top right corner.
And if they have a Discogs account or decide to sign up for one, they can purchase the exact items you want with just a few clicks.
Share Your Wantlist With The Discogs App
If you use the iPhone or Android app, you can easily share your Wantlist via email, text, or direct message.
First, you’ll want to navigate to your Wantlist. iPhone users will see the icon at the bottom of their screen and Android users will find their Wantlist in the dropdown menu located in the top left corner.
Once you’ve pulled up your Wantlist, tap the three dots in the top right corner and select the share option. On the iPhone app, “Share” will appear at the bottom and with the Android app, users will see a “Share Wantlist” option in a dropdown menu.
Once you’ve selected your app’s share option, you’ll see a collage of cover art from releases in your Wantlist.
If you’d like to see different artwork appear, select the “Shuffle” option.
Once you’re ready to share, select the Share option and you will see different options pop up. Depending on the version of the app you’re using, these options will look slightly different. Select the desired option, intended recipient, and hit send.
The person you send it to will receive a link to your Wantlist. Once they click on the link, all they have to do is select “Open” and they will be able to see everything on your Wantlist!
If the person you send your Wantlist to has any issues viewing it, make sure your Wantlist is marked as viewable in your privacy settings.
Download Or Print Your Wantlist
If you know a gift buyer who would prefer a spreadsheet or printout, the Discogs Wantlist can easily be exported.
To the left of the “Show Items in Marketplace” button, you’ll see a link to “Export My Wantlist.“ Click on that link, make sure Wantlist is selected in the dropdown menu, and select “Request Data Export.“
Once submitted, you’ll see a green banner appear with the following confirmation:
Next, check your Discogs inbox or the email inbox associated with your Discogs account and you’ll see a message with the subject line: “Discogs data export available for download”
Follow the prompts in the email to download a zip file of your Wantlist. Unzip the file to view the CSV spreadsheet and print it if you’d prefer a hard copy.
Share Individual Links From Your Wantlist
If your Wantlist is too big to share in its entirety or you want to focus on specific items, simply click on the individual releases, save their URLs in a document or email, and send the links to the intended recipient. They can then use the Database to double check details before making purchases in the Discogs Marketplace.
