Top 25 Most Expensive Items Sold on Discogs in January 2023

January 2023’s most expensive releases include hard-to-find jazz records, rare punk 7-inches, and a few box sets from legendary artists.

Jazz albums from Governor’s State University Jazz Band, Tina Brooks, and Louis Smith all sold for big bucks in the month of January. The live album from Governor’s State University Jazz Band is especially intriguing as the Discogs Database provides very little information. With a little extra digging, you’ll learn that the advanced compositions and unforgettable performances of this mid-’70s college jazz band established this obscure LP as a must-have for serious jazz collectors.

Rare punk 7-inches from the Misfits, Negative Approach, and Heart Attack were among the top 25 most expensive items sold last month. This particular pressing of the Misfits’ Evilive 7-inch is worth singling out as the entire pressing of 800 hand-numbered copies was initially made available to members of the Misfits’ fan club, the Fiend Club.

Box sets from artists like Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, and Pearl Jam also made the most expensive list in January. Much like the Misfits’ 7-inch, the Pearl Jam box set was self-released and the only way you could purchase one was if you were a member of the Pearl Jam fan club, known as Ten Club.

Additional noteworthy releases include an extremely rare test pressing of a compilation featuring Soundgarden, Green River, and the Melvins and a Legendary Pink Dots / Bee Queen release that features a 7-inch, a cassette tape glued to a t-shirt, and other randomly selected audio housed in a hand-numbered plastic record bag.
