Spanish singer-songwriter Rosalía is not your typical popstar. She garnered international fame (and graduated with honors from the Catalonia College of Music) following the release of her sophomore album and baccalaureate project El Mal Querer. That album cemented her reputation as an experimental artist who pushed the boundaries of Latin music by blending flamenco and música urbana with traditional pop styles. In 2022, she released her third studio album, Motomami, which quickly became one of the year’s most popular records.

Rosalía described Motomami as her most personal project to date. It’s a concept album, presented in two parts, that dives deep into the singer’s experiences over the last three years, including the end of a romantic relationship and her struggles with fame, as well as her feelings of isolation and homesickness. The album’s production draws heavily from Rosalía’s Latin music influences and includes fusions of reggaeton, bachata, flamenco, and bolero styles with equally bold hip hop and electronic elements. The result is a brazenly abstract, genre-bending record that treats tracks about the fickle nature of stardom (“Sakura”) with the same sincerity and humor as those about sex (“Hentai”).

Motomami has been dubbed by music critics as one of the boldest releases of the year and it’s on track to become one of the most awarded as well. The album peaked at No. 1 and No. 3 on Billboard’s Latin Pop Albums and Top Latin Albums charts, and has already won the publication’s award for Latin Pop Album of the Year. Motomami has also been nominated for two Grammys and four Latin Grammys.

Fans of Rosalía’s Motomami will like the list of albums below that break down the boundaries of genre.

Producer, songwriter, and DJ Sophie was known for her experimental take on pop music. A pioneer of the hyperpop style, Sophie used synthesized sounds, driving instrumentals, and pitched vocals to produce her kinetic songs. Oil Of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides is her only studio album and is regarded as one of 2018’s best — it earned a Grammy nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album. Deep bass, glitches, and synth underscore whispers and pitch-shifted vocals as Sophie explores themes of gender, humanity, and individuality on Oil Of Every Pearl’s Un-Insides. Fans of Motomami will enjoy the layered, energetic production on this album.

Kick I is the first album in Venezuelan musician and producer Arca’s Kick quintet series. An electronic pop artist with strong ties to her Latin roots, Arca primarily sings in Spanish and often samples reggaeton recordings in her work. While she lists electronic music heavyweights Aphex Twin and Squarepusher among her immediate influences, Arca stated her love of pop music — particularly that of Björk and Madonna — helped shape the songs on Kick I. Like Motomami, this album also features reggaeton, trap, and R&B flairs in its production. However, listeners can expect a more deconstructed, grittier sound from Arca.

Its production, handled in part by Skrillex, Benny Blanco, and Jack Antonoff, reflects elements of pop, electronic, soul, and trip hop styles. Twigs’ breathy soprano vocals float effortlessly over largely experimental compositions. Fans of Rosalía will enjoy the genre-bending nature of Magdalene along with its emotionally raw lyrics and performances.

Rapper and singer M.I.A. is known for her music that blends alternative, dance, electronic, hip hop, and world music elements. Her second studio album, Kala, is just as raw, experimental, and fresh today as it was upon its release in 2006. In making the album, M.I.A. looked to her influences — including Timbaland, who produced the track “Come Around” — for lyrical and sonic inspiration. Kala’s production included traditional folk styles, as well as Tamil music and instrumentation, in addition to its electronic and hip hop foundations. Listeners will enjoy M.I.A.’s use of Bollywood and Tamil film samples to complement her production, a technique echoed by Rosalía with various Latin music styles on Motomami.

N.E.R.D’s sound is best described as alternative hip hop, with the band incorporating rock, funk, and electronic styles into most of their songs. Williams set out to create an energetic record, which listeners can feel during several moments on Seeing Sounds, including “Everyone Nose” and “Spaz”. Fans of Motomami will particularly enjoy the production of Seeing Sounds and can compare it to songs produced by both Williams and Hugo on Rosalía’s album.
