Recommendations based on
Nightclubbing
By Grace Jones
This recommendation by Koenie Van Immerseel, Owner of Wally’s Groove World in Antwerp, Belgium.
Nightclubbing sees Grace Jones perfecting her post-punk, post-disco, reggae-infused pop. In addition to Grace herself, the album featured other luminaries such as Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, and Wally Badarou. It was recorded together with two other Grace Jones albums by the same musicians at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas (where producer Chris Blackwell recorded most of the Island Records). This album feels like a continuous mix. You can listen to it from beginning to end, and then easily all over again. A timeless masterpiece.

Recommendation #1
My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts
Brian Eno and David Byrne
My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is a studio album by Brian Eno and David Byrne. Released in February 1981, it has been a truly groundbreaking album in the musical landscape ever since. More than that, it’s a complete musical journey guiding you through life with the help of rousing, mesmerizing African and Middle Eastern rhythms, as well as the first sampling techniques. This made Byrne continue to work with African musicians on his Stop Making Sense album in 1984.
Recommendation #2
African Electronic Music 1975-1982
Francis Bebey
“All the music you can make with this flute is a conversation.” Cameroonian composer and writer Francis Bebey beautifully incorporates this philosophical finding into his musical creation. Bebey had a simple and clear mission with his production: How do you use Western technology to make African music sound more familiar, and by doing so, promote it in the Western world? This remarkable record is a flawless realization of that mission.
Recommendation #3
The World Of Arthur Russell
Arthur Russell
Avant-garde multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer Arthur Russell is one of the unsung heroes of both the house and experimental music movements. Russell is a highly regarded innovator. His vast musical contributions throughout the 1980s reveal a contemplative genius who easily traversed the worlds of dance and post-modern composition. Few musicians did dabble in disco, experimental performance, and classical dance projects at the time during the heady days from 1977 to 1984. His singing, together with cello and electronic loops, makes for quite uneasy listening at first hearing, but then utter beauty reveals itself in his minimalistic motives.
Recommendation #4
Nasca
Nasca
The deeply sensual grooves, infectious rhythms, and psychedelic soundscapes sounded like nothing heard before when this album was recorded in 1987. The musicians of Aroma di Amore and Starvin Marvin and the Paranoid Androids worked on this ethereal, offbeat side project in Ghent, Belgium. The otherworldly “world music” with jazzy and post-punk riffs and loops, taking side routes into dub, industrial, and tribal sonic landscapes, went on to get a life of its own.

Wally’s Groove World
Antwerp, Belgium
Antwerp, a major port city situated in the middle of Europe, became a serious hub for the import of vinyl from the United Kingdom and the United States back in the late 1960s and ‘70s. In the 1980s, a lot of the imported vinyl coming from the U.S. was distributed by the pioneering USA Import Records, and larger collections could be found at the now-closed Record Collector and Brabo record stores. In the ‘90s, Music Man Ghent became an important player.
