Jam & Spoon

Perfil:
Techno / trance / euro-dance duo from Frankfurt, Germany, active 1991-2006.

Jam & Spoon's first album, BreaksUnit1, was released in 1991. They had their first hit with the 1992 song "Stella," considered to be a trance classic. A British DJ on Radio 1 went as far to say that this song saved techno music.

Markus Löffel died of a heart attack in his Berlin flat on 11 January 2006 at the age of 39.

Play me just a split second long sound from Tripomatic Fairytales 2001 (1993) and Tripomatic Fairytales 2002 (1993) albums and i could tell you it's Jam & Spoon. The music in these albums are very well crafted for a range of states of consciousness. In my experience, they should be experienced in various altered states of perception. All tracks on these albums will have a different effect on you depending on your perception state. The level of creativity in these albums is mind boggling. Some of the sounds in these albums still have not been matched yet in my opinion. If you have listened them during 90's you know what i mean. If you have not listened them yet, consider yourself late. Let me know if you try them. Also please keep in mind that both of these albums are a trip and a journey on their own and should best be listened as a whole and not by track by track. For me Jam & Spoon will always be Tripomatic Fairytales 2001 & 2002 (1993) albums. You can find their effect on many other artists works. I believe they left a clear mark in music history during the transition from acid house to Trance.

Breaks Unit 1 (1991) was too experimental for me however it's quite good for mixing with other stuff. The whole album is basically just drums.

Jam & Spoon changed their style in Kaleidoscope (1997) and Tripomatic Fairytales 3003 (2004) albums and they are not influential like the Tripomatic Fairytales 2001 & 2002 (1993) albums.

It really saddens me to know that Mark Spoon is dead. I think they could be considered as a Run-D.M.C. of Trance/Electronica/Ambient.

I believe Jam & Spoon will always be one of the greatest electronic groups.

Jam and Spoon are one of the first Electonic acts that I followed, all the way back to 1992, 1993. When I then saw the video to Follow Me on MTV Latin America, I knew it was going to become one of those timeless works of art.
The Tripomatic Fairytales 2001 and 2002 albums are jewels.
Although some of their music was burnt out and constantly hammered on the radio, making it sound too commercial, it was in fact just the tip of the Iceberg, and one that not too many people cared to explore.

After a long silence their 3rd release, and unfortunately last album, the style had considerably changed, but, still a magical sense of making music.
Vata is my favourite track on this last album.
A rare 12" vinyl has a Sr Coconut Mix, which I treasure.

It is a great loss for the Electronic Community the very untimely death of Mark Spoon. They are in fact a Fantastic duo. But their music will live on.

Mark Spoon died on January 11 2006. I am taking a few moments to write about his collaboration with Jam El Mar. Together, as Jam and Spoon, they surely knew how to surprise me with their outstanding music in the 90's. I first discovered them with "Right In The Night", their most commercial single. I never liked it (although some remixes are better, and who doesn't like the obscure "Follow Me"?), but looking at the back of the album "Tripomatic Fairytales 2001", I was curious about hearing these tracks which had fantastic, strange titles like "Two Spies In The House Of Love", "Who Opened The Door To Nowhere", "Odyssey To Anyoona". So I did. Then, it became like a revelation. I first heard "Stella", "Find Me"... and then I discovered "2002" which also impressed me a lot: tracks like "V. Angel is calling" (a deceased person is trying to reach someone on the phone, but is not able to talk due to decorporation) are little moments, little stories which I listened with a lot of attention and interest.
"Kaleidoscope" is also a great album. A lot more vocals this time (all courtesy of Plavka), but still a lot of originality ("I Pull My Gun", "Usual Suspect", "Warm Dead Dog", "Get In / Get Out") and enough elements to link this opus with their previous works ("El Baile", "Kiss Away").
Their singles were always pushed on the commercial side (and judging them indiviadually is a different thing, some of them are good, some aren't), which makes people think they were just another Euro House fake act. But they weren't. They were true artists. And together they filled my teenage years with their powerful, intelligent and fantastic music.
I am sad the story is over, but I will still have Tripomatic cravings. Thank you Jam and Spoon!
