Notes
Winner of the 1995 Mercury Music Prize.
Following the initial issue, there were Australian, American & Euro releases with an additional track "It's A Fire" inserted between "Wandering Star" & "Numb" [e.g. 828 553 vs the earlier 828 522 issues]. On vinyl, "It's A Fire" is listed as an additional track only on the Greek edition of the album. Some later issues also include the remix "Sour Sour Times" plus the "To Kill A Dead Man" track (from the film which led to Portishead's record contract and the cover image used on "Dummy").
For "Glory Box", most booklets claim Isaac Hayes' "Ikes Rap III" as sample source, but actually it's a sample from "Ikes Rap II" that is used (the same sample Tricky used on "Hell Is Round the Corner").
Track 2 contains samples from Lalo Schifrin's "Danube Incident" a percussion sample from Smokey Brooks' "Spin-It Jig".
Track 3 contains samples Weather Report's "Elegant People".
Track 5 contains samples from Eric Burdon & War's "Magic Mountain"
Track 9 contains samples from Johnnie Ray's "I'll Never Fall In Love Again"
Track 10 contains samples from Isaac Hayes' "Ike's Rap II".

Great pressing, was very clean out of the sleeve and it sounds great. referencing Dummy (CD, Album, Reissue) 422 828 553-2
First Canadian non-club edition has the full range sound one would expect from this truly iconic, epic recording. Space and resonance.- Overall this vinyl sounds incredible as I expected it too, only downside was when I opened it up it was alarmingly dirty and had a few scuffs and one minor scratch fresh out of the shrink wrap. Nothing that affects how it plays just disappointing to see as I am pretty meticulous about my vinyls and keeping them in pristine condition. I think mine was an anomaly as other people have not reported having anything similar to what I received. I do still recommend this as I think it is essential to every collection.

Great album, nice dull sound. I did notice some ticks at the end of song 4 and the start of song 5 but it didn’t bother me that much because it comes with an authenticity vibe on a 30 year old album.- This digital reissue (remaster?) sounds great. It's clear that a lot of TLC went into the production. The clarity, dynamics, and mix are perfect.

Ok so this is getting interesting. I bought this from a fair without realising it was unofficial, and when I got home and figured I'd been ripped off, the disc sat forgotten in my collection. I recently bought an official version (https://www.discogs.com/release/10147986-Portishead-Dummy) which sounds great and I decided to A/B it with this unofficial version and I found two things:
1.) This edition does indeed have the extra track "It's A Fire" which seemingly only exists on vinyl on the 1994 Greek pressing, which is very desirable.
2.) When compared to the sound of the aforementioned official repress, it actually sounds great! I would say the noise floor is a tiny bit higher but barely noticeable.
What is quite strange, is that the extra track sits on side 2, which is not the case for the original Greek pressing. The album in general has some spots that are quite sibilant and treble-heavy as the production likes to play with 'lo-fi' textures and then bring in deeper mix profiles for effect (you can hear this very clearly in "Strangers"). The fact that they also pepper the record with vinyl crackles and pops makes assessing a pressing of this tricky unless you're very familiar with the original version (or obsessively compare versions) but I'm pretty confident to say this is actually a surprisingly decent pressing. I've got a few unofficial pressings and they always tend to sound really flat and compressed, and it's not the case with this one.
When comparing disc labels with the official release, there is a difference in sharpness of the print, and colours are less vibrant. The insert on this version is a double-sided sheet (whereas the official copy I have is a printed sleeve). Not a huge difference in quality on the outer sleeve.
Would love to hear some more from others who own this pressing. Listening on:
Turtable: Debut Carbon Eco (upgraded with acrylic platter & aluminium subplatter)
Cartridge: Ortofon 2M Blue
Amplifier: Rega IO
Speakers: Q 3020i (stand-mounted)
Cable: QED XT25 5m- Great and flawless pressing! The gatefold is also nicely made with a gloss finish and the record comes in a polylined black sleeve.
