Perhaps their best album, certainly the most groundbreaking musically, the one that was most ahead of its time. The whole musical landscape of "The Gates of Delirium" goes far beyond the mid-seventies in some ways, pointing forward to acts like Die Krupps, early Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds or even Metallica. The other two songs are very innovative too and beautiful compositions in their own right. Steve Howe's guitar playing is fantastic all through the album (and sounds very different from what he had been doing two years earlier), Alan White provides outstanding drumming, and the rest of the band are outdoing themselves as well.

The production and engineering were masterful already on the original album - must have been a very tricky job with such a packed and rumbling sonic image - and the Rhino reissue puts in a great effort again, keeping the edge and vitality of the playing but giving that extra touch of clarity. An essential piece in the catalogue of a great band.
