Yes, to accept it for what it is, the story behind this album helps a great deal - and while there really is nothing new under the sun, you cannot ignore the charm of Mr. Bartos bringing his retro-futuristic ideas back to the present (continuous).

The irresistible synth sounds are spot-on and satisfaction guarantee - the additional plus goes for the vocal melodiousness; too bad, Karl Bartos' voice wasn't fronting all those Kraftwerk gems rather than Hütter's (apart from the majestic "The Telephone Call"). On the other hand however, "Off the Record" is also demonstrating how the very Kraftwerk remain stuck in their frame ever since 1991, flogging their electronic horse with updates evident mainly in the line-up changes (robots included).

With Bartos' constant echoing of the exact Kraftwerk DNA in his own work, the demon behind "Off the Record" remains hard to ignore - starting with the fragmentation of former duplicates into the album's cover art; the plastic head (like the music) is forever timeless but just as tiresome in clinging on to the exhausted "Kraftwerkian" dream.

I think that after a few hearings the album begins to reveal it's subtle beauty and the musical mind of Bartos. As one person commented, the album should be heard in context (when the tracks were recorded). Also I don't think comparison to material by Kraftwerk should be THE measuring stick (with that said "Rhythmus' sounds like Kraftwerk to me). The album should be judged with an open mind and historical reference. Thanks.

You can like the album or not. But I hate to see, that some stupid one rate this album six times with one star. This is not fair to the artist and not helpful to the users of discogs.

OK, all is true about the release: almost no originality, nothing new here but after having listened the album a few times, I have to say, there are some very solid tracks here. Plus: Instant Bayeruth shows us the different side of the artist even if the track is very boring and flat. Apart from it all, here one can hear one of the greatest contribution to Kraftwerk (what the latter lacks of since): the melody and chord structures. Simply, Bartos is a classic songwriterand has the talent to what makes a song a playful tune. Pity, the instrumentation is very bad, especially since his first album "Esperanto" 1993 which was outstanding in the electronic music history. Here, this one is rather a documentary. What is the most irritating is the Atomium and the speech synth all the time. The nicest track I find is the Hausmusik.

As opposed to the bad review below the listener has to realize this is archival material from various points as early as the 70's. To fully enjoy this excellent release it is best to read the notes about each track, you will find out that Karl Bartos is primarily a conceptual artist (e.g. Cage, Stockhausen, Eno), where the idea is paramount, say than the end result. This was always implied by Kraftwerk but verified by this release. This is an absolutely essential release comprised of working ideas mostly during the Kraftwerk stage--The track "Without a Trace of Emotion" is brilliant in so many levels—providing illuminating prospective of being a human in a robot band. Thought provoking, nostalgic, experimental, honest, raw and intellectual. Again to enjoy this release do not get the digital version of this I recommend to buy a physical copy, as to delve into the important notes on each track.

After Playing this a number of times , i would say this is a grower, his best release yet tho, there are those who will try and compare this to his former bandmates ralf and florian, you need to listen to this with no expectation of it being the next "computer world" and a open mind .
it is very poppy in parts and the album is a collection of various ideas and improvisations from his time as part of kraftwerk and would easily fit in with the 80's synth pop releases of that era. With no new releases forthcoming from Ralf Hutter this release will have a audience ready to Hear it

a tragic album - there is no single stylistic element, topic or artistic idea that we have not heard from kraftwerk more than 30 years ago. much worse: bartos even fails to at least COPY kraftwerk properly, the album sounds cheap, bored and uninspired. weak rhythmic structures, not a single catchy hookline, pretentious lyrics. the worst KRAFTWERK - tribute album you can imagine is more entertaining. it is a pity bartos never managed to emancipate himself from the kraftwerk period - this album seems to be something like his ultimate artistic surrender. hard to believe anyone will ever stand listening to the whole thing.
