I was excited to get these 180g audiophile repressings of Pink Floyd’s albums directly from Pink Floyd Records. I am planning to get them all. They are not being released all at once. I have The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, A Saucer Full Of Secrets, Ummagumma, & Atom Heart Mother. I have ordered More, Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, The Wall & The Division Bell. The next album to be released is The Dark Side Of The Moon.

The first of these, The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, is a record I am very familiar with. This early Syd Barrett incarnation of Floyd is classic psychedelic rock that I dig very much. This recording is produced and mastered beautifully and is a joy to listen to on vinyl. This is the level of quality that I expected from Pink Floyd Records.

The record was released in a beautiful, single jacket with the original UK cover in 180g vinyl. This pressing had a relatively low signal level (-9 dB) but was whisper quiet with virtually no surface noise. I can’t emphasize enough the incredible quality of this pressing. It had very little or no dynamic range compression (average score of +0.5 as measured by DRC-Meter). My processed version (click & pop removal, background noise removal, tube preamp simulation and limited to -1.5 dB) has an average DRC score of +1.4.

I thou thoroughly enjoyed this vinyl edition and, of course, gave it 5 out of 5 stars.

Records are in imperfect medium to begin with, so the difference may be in something like using a different tape machine for the mastering, it's just been so many years since the original was brought to market- there's bound to be differences. The deadwax did have Bernie Grundman's initials, so I doubt that there will be a better remaster out there for a while unless MFSL gets their hands on the mixdown tapes.

These old Pink Floyd albums are getting rarer and rarer, good copies are hard to find, the people who have them know what they have and they're not going to let go of them easily. I'm just glad to have a nice clean copy- defect free as much as the medium will permit, and I gladly accept that they will be a bit different. This is replacing a battle- worn copy of "A Nice Pair" that was probably tracked too many times with excessive pressure on a Voice-Of-Music record changer.

Just got done spinning this. Then spun my UK Harvest disc from a Great Pair.. Wow what a difference. Sounds like a different stereo mix. This new disc sounds like it may be the original 1967 funky stereo mix, was tempted to put it into mono. The Great pair stereo mix sounds more coherent. The new disc sounds a bit congested and lacking dynamic range compared the Great Pair. Even though is says remastered with the original Analog master tapes, sound like they did something funky to it. Think I prefer the Great Pair disc just sounds more analog and organic. A bit disappointed this one. On the plus side it was very quite.

Great pressing. A little surprised. No noise, good quality sleeve. Expensive but worth it.

Great sounding pressing, very quiet. The fake flipback cover is a small but tacky unfortunate detail.
