On forums in the mid 2000s, I was asked from time to time the best current D&B DJ/artist/producer and, although back then I listened to a lot of D&B and had many artists that I kept an eye on, or in this case an ear on, John B was my top D&B artist. His varied styles and just how--hard--his tracks could be just won me over.

It can be bewildering to some listeners of John B in his opposites of the wide range of styles he produces in ; if you'd asked one that only listened to his liquid funk tracks that he makes dark & hard music, they simply wouldn't believe it, and the other way around, if you'd tell a hard-stepper that he makes tracks that evokes Disco music, they'd thought you were making a joke.

But above all, at the time he released tracks, he set himself apart from many current producers. One can deduce that John B has a vast EDM knowledge, has great research skills, or has a talent for innovation.

John B. My thoughts: he's a musical genius. In my un-biased opinion, one of the truly underrated artists of the genre, if you can even pigeonhole him into drum and bass anymore. He has contributed so much to the scene as a whole (the Visions and Catalyst albums come to mind) as well as produced some of the most memorable pieces of music in the genre ("Up All Night" anyone?).

I get it. I get why some people feel that John B has "lost it" in terms of his musical creativity. He doesn't produce every track with the hardcore genre-snob drum and bass head in mind. I used to think that was a problem. Not so much anymore. Maybe that is maturity, maybe that is a change in taste, not sure. However, I can definitely sit here and say that John B is FAR from uncreative. Maybe you're not into this "electrostep" sound that he pretty much materialized on his own, or maybe you don't fancy his vocal work (I don't really either), but one thing you cannot call this guy is uncreative. And he's a pretty damn good DJ too. Varied sets, plays more than just run-of-the-mill drum and bass the entire time. I don't really care how much hate I catch for saying it, John B is an awesome producer and if more people would break away from the formula, I think that could be a very healthy occurrence for the scene.

No doubt he is one of the most accomplished producers in the scene, however he appears to have lost his soul. Somewhere around 5 years ago he started actually believing people when they said how talented he was and stopped searching beyond himself for track inspiration. His work pinnacled in my opinion with his remix of 'thru the vibe' but its just been downhill from there.
Open your eyes John. Regain my respect and do what you are capable of.

one of the most varying producers, but also one of the best. John B's sound can range from hard, dark jungle to jungle-remixed salsa music, to chilling atmospheric drum and bass. all-round great stuff.

fantastic producer, amazing sounding records that swing from mellow to the hasrhest tech step
notable tracks are jazz session, sights beyond and fermats theorem though all the tracks that I have heard are brilliant (including those of the dissapointing colours 5x12" box).
old skool heads NEED to check out music takes you remix as it is how jungle should be
