Studied harmony and the history of Western music at Schola Cantorum in Paris (1963-1965)
First field recordings in France (Aubrac, Berry, Île d'Yeu, Corse, Col de Tende) (1965-1968).
Founding member of Société française d'ethnomusicologie (French Ethnomusicology Society) (1984).
Founding member of Bureau des musiques traditionnelles (Bureau for traditional music) for Ministère de la culture (1982-1984).
Run the Laboratoire d'ethnomusicologie [CNRS] (Ethnomusicology laboratory) at Musée de l'Homme (1990-2003).

Lortat-Jacob recorded music in Morocco (1969-1981), Sardinia (1970-), Ethiopia (1975), Mali (1986), Romania (1980-1981/1990-1998), Bali (1999), Malta, Formentera, Albania (1983, 2002-).
