These early pre-Reprise recordings of Trini Lopez are fantastic! After his Reprise debut became a huge hit with the hit single, If I Had a Hammer, the King label that owned & had previously released his late-50s singles, scrambled to package them up in '63 for quick release hot on the heels of Trini's newfound fame. King made a very odd choice to add applause between the tracks and an MC announcing Trini at the beginning of each side in order to give the impression of a live nightclub recording like his Reprise debut - it's not a live recording. But that's show biz.
So these King tracks are fantastic twangy rock n roll tunes. It's easy to see why Trini was being auditioned to replace fellow Texan Buddy Holly to replace the deceased legend in the Crickets - fortunately that plan was scrapped.
