Here's an album that's destined to fly under the radar, yet it shouldn't. Gravity Darkening alternates between hard space-techno workouts - by which I mean they are propulsive but have an "out there" vibe, bleepy, reverberant and melodic hooks - and whispy, edge-of-the-galaxy ambient pieces.
Track times are perfect, nothing is much longer than 4 minutes. Every track makes its point, pulsates, vibrates and places you into space and then moves onto the next piece in short time. Many tracks feel even quite progressive with their not predictable stop-start-whereisthisgoingnext arrangements. Many of them break down into melodic prog-type sections then just strike back in to pummel away. This gives the album as a whole strong sense of progression and it never, ever gets dull.
I particularly enjoy the "winding up" synth warmths of Convective Heat Transfer, the darkness and light of the soft pads versus the this-feels-oddly-wrong squelchy bassline in Gravity Stirs (I get hints of Trolley Route here?), and finally the mighty Dark Physical Cosmology with its driving machines failing sirens against incessant plips and huge kicks before - in a very cleverly done way, I might add - it falls apart (in a good way!) then sighs away into fading alien whisps and then... the darkening?
