Recommandations
Avis
- Can anyone comment on how the remasters of Lick My Decals Off, Spotlight Kid, and Clear Spot compare to the originals? I have always felt like Zoot Horn Rollo sounded anemic on these albums (Beefheart notoriously had it in for him, and threw him in a dumpster at one point), and that the mixes could sound "bigger" in general. The saxophones on Flash Gordon's Ape were also way too loud. There's a version without them which is way better. If this boxset rectifies some of these issues, I might buy it.
- Modifié il y a 8 ansWhilst it's possible to have slight reservations about the packaging and the booklet - you can't fault the music contained on these four discs. Imagine a world in which, in just a single year, Beefheart produced not one but two great albums - 1972 - it was like living in paradise.
All three of the studio albums contained here reveal highlight after highlight, I don't think there's a bad track on any of them. People who don't 'get it' will never 'get it' so forget about them. For Beefheart fans I don't think these albums have ever sounded better, not even on vinyl and it's great to have LMDOB back on CD at last.
The outtakes/ alt takes disc is maybe a notch down but it's great to hear work in progress on tracks that turned up on later albums in completely different versions. I must admit that, whilst I consider myself a Beefheart fan, I haven't gone down the bootleg road as much as others and I was unaware of these versions. I believe there's more in the archive so let's hope we get some more soon.
Weird to think back to a time when major labels would unleash this type of avant freak rock onto the world. Not many, if any, do so now. Major labels are so lame these days - they used to take pride in finding and nurturing wayward talent and received massive kudos for it. I suppose they would claim they can't afford it now.... the bean counters have taken over.
