how many admins are still active?

Trying to ask an admin I´ve seen, no activity since years, now I like to know how many of all those "admins" are still active in this forum? 4, 5? More?

I don't really use Discogs groups and haven't in ages. I have not been hit by a bus yet. Also, don't confuse being a group admin with being Discord staff. I am definitely not the latter.

When everything is accepted here, from CD to files, why should there exist a forum for vinyl? Makes no sense, admins are not interested in their forum, what sense does it make? Let´s start a new forum, about vinyl, really vinyl, nothing else!

Why not? (A great record store in Vienna in the 1980ies!)

To give you some background. This forum was originally set up by Frankie Bones in 2005 or 2006 (i.e. +/- 20 years ago).

This was just after a new version of discogs was launched where anyone and everyone could set up their own forum. Before that, the only person who could add a new forum was Kevin (discogs CEO). This change in 2005/2006 explains why there's such an abundance of forums on discogs, most of which are completely dead.

When Frankie set up the Vinyl forum, he added a bunch of people as moderators – users who at the time were regular contributors on discogs, myself included. None of us were asked first, we were just added. I didn't have a problem with that, but it explains why the mods on here don't feel any sense of ownership to this forum and don't exercise their admin rights. Myself, I had completely forgotten about the existence of this forum, and the fact that I'm officially a moderator, when I was contacted by pinkindustries today. So the "football team" of mods is essentially a group of people who were added as admins two decades ago without any prior consultation, and most (if not all) of us have no idea what goes on in here and probably don't care either. Myself, I haven't been active in the discogs forums for at least 10 years, and I'm not going to throw my weight around here anytime soon.

If someone who's actually active on this forum would like to moderate it, I'll happily promote them to admin (I think I can do that, I just have to figure out how, but I seem to recall it's pretty easy). But please note that I do not accept any responsibility for whatever happens thereafter :)

Please tag my username if you've got something to add re: the above, I'm not going to monitor this thread on a regular basis and may very well forget about the whole thing unless someone reminds me about it.

I run my own forum but that doesnt need much attention as it is invite only ( https://www.discogs.com/group/52 ) and people know how to behave lol and the one I do heavly moderate is the open TuneID forum since most people dont care to read the rules: https://www.discogs.com/group/9

This forum was indeed as KK mentioned set up by Bones way back and was done as he described.

So now and then I pop up in here and might do some things here but it aint a priority.

I believe the first ever post here was Frankie spamming his sales list. That post would've got deleted and he would've gotten shit for that on the other forums at that time, so I assume he probably wanted a space where he could do what he wanted, and could delate his "haters" responses!

I've been in this forum for years. Probably more than ten. Something that bears mentioning amidst the topic of activity drop-off is that there just aren't that many 'new' discussions we can have in here. Most of the questions, most of the solutions to peoples' problems, most of the philosophical debate... It's really all been said at this point. I used to visit more often because it was interesting to hear folks' thoughts on color vinyl variants and what kind of shelving they use for storage. But at this point virtually every topic that could even tangentially be related to vinyl has been discussed, probably multiple times.

If you're wondering why the group isn't more active, I think that's the main reason. This is a hobby and a lifestyle, and a fulfilling one at that... But there's only so many times we can discuss half-speed mastering or what stylus you use or what's the best record store in the UK.

Also, what on earth would admins and mods really "do"? Are people being naughty in this group to the point that we need authorities to step in?? What have I missed?!

I'm contemplating buying a new cartridge. Nagaoka MP-200. But you know, it's really expensive. Ortofon also released a new line that's supposed to supercede its Quintet line. Really though, the one's worth getting I'm not sure they can stand up to my digital front end. Vinyl has always been for Djing for me, digital for listening.
