  • BRUCE1991 over 10 years ago

    @vin100vega
If you hollow me to make a little rectification.
I would say that the only acid house track you mentionned is "Jesus loves the acid", other tracks are new beat with acid in it.Remember, Back in 1988 and 1989, new beat and acid house where so popular that they fusionned and it was very common to see european records with "acid new beat" stickers on it.
To me real new beat was born in Belgium around 1987 and acid house was born in 1986 in U.S.A.
    But everything exploded in 1988.

it's very hard to tell when acid or new beat was born. i have heard this library LP from '83 which contains tb303 & tr606 only (that was the concept by the artist as these instruments were on the market as so called twin-tools).

pls remember that also chris and cosey made a long sweeping electro track (on "elemental 7" from 1984) that contains a genuine tb303 (acid!) bassline.

moreover, it's a legend that acid was "invented" by accident (by manipulating the knobs while actually playing the pattern, the so-called bug). the main reason why black american actually started using the TB303 back in 1987 is quite simple: the machine was not popular at all (in "real" - more elite - musician scene) and considered as crap/cheap. by 1986-87 the silver box was available everywhere (for peanuts!) and therefore an affordable tool for poor (chicago) afro-americans now defined as "the inventors of acid house". back in these days new synths and drum computers were still very expensive and were only used by the wealthy (or electronic producers that were commercially doing well) note that eg. TG (although they tried to act underground) made a lot of money with their albums so they could afford the best tools (did u ever had a look at the chris and cosey studio before they started selling parts of it? these people had almost everything with a reputation, especially since carter was a leading authority in analog (& later digital) equipment). anyway, those who purchased a TB303 in 82-83 got rid of their instrument by 1986-87 because much "better" bass-synths were availabe. (btw. this is not a discussion whether the tb is a good bass or not, i love it) and the machines got circulated in the second-hand shops. it's only AFTER 1992 that Tb's became expensive & cult. (I can know as I purchased the TB from jo bogaert in the early '90). ps. maybe we should start a new topic on 'ACID HOUSE'?
  • DocVinyl over 10 years ago

I know that in Brussels in the late 80's there was a store called magdemo that sold musical equipment. One day there was heavy rainfall in Brussels and half of the store was flooded, they used boxes full of 808's 909's & 303's to put the worthwhile equipment on a safe height ... That same month they were all put on sale at minus 70% (damaged non worthwhile goods they were called )... About 1 year later everybody in Belgium was making New Beat ... With 909's 808's and 303's ... Quite ironic ....

Zsa Zsa Laboum - something scary (Kaos 012)
Quite surprising to see the second one in other poeple's lists, too *g*
  • JeanMarcDekesel over 10 years ago

Nobody 16 Bit "Where Are You"?

I remember me asking in '86 the DJ "Hey, can I know what record this is?" and especially he just replying 'No' ...
Anyway, it was the instrumental version and pitched down all the way. That was the one that started it for me.

    1. 16 Bit - Where Are You (Instrumental)
    2. A Split Second - Flesh (pitch down!)
    3. L&O - Even Now
    4. The Maxx - Cocaïne
    5. Reese & Santonio / (Hi-Hat version) Rock To The Beat

That's true 16Bit was not supposed to be new beat, but the sound was there! in 1986!
The same guys than in Electrica salsa where behind it, Right?
  • JeanMarcDekesel over 10 years ago

absolutely! Too bad for the silly BA BA - BA BA vocals, but apart from that, that one fitted nicely too. (You know Sven Väth was actually behind that?)
  • BRUCE1991 over 10 years ago

    Yes i knew for Sven.
He was kind of a pop star before being one of the most well known producer-DJ in electronic music (or the pope of trance also).
I've checked my records but it seems that there is no instrumental version of electrica (only a remix).
I don't know if an instrumental was released.
Also, not new beat but it sounds very near.

  • BomberOne over 10 years ago

My fav. (among the hundreds of top NB tunes) :
Public Relations = New Beat Mind.
Desperate and sad like New Wave, heavy and powerfull like EBM, this is it!

These guys really got it... Did you hear what they did just before, I mean, their stuff like Mad House, clearly aiming at Blancmange?

As for New Beat/Acid distinction, I guess in fact, ACID is not a genre, but a style you can give to ANY genre (Acid New Beat, Acid House, Acid Rock even!!)
    Don't you agree ?

To me Acid Drill was new beat, just like Bazz's Drop Deal, for ex.

Just a few more new beat rarities I love : PLB System's "Feel The Rhythm", Casa Nostra (M. F. De Wulf!) "Insomnia", Snowy Red's "Euroshima Wardance" (soooo New wave!!) But It is so hard to classify!

@DocVinyl : Now that's what I call a story :Rain created New Beat! Just love it!

did anyone buy the V/VM new beat 12" I Wanna Fuck Miss Nicky Trax?
    very Destelbergen-esk!
  • BomberOne over 10 years ago

I don't know what to think about this guy V/VM : his aphex Twin's diversions were cool, but I found his new beat track a bot boring : never really take off... But the title (I Wanna Fuck Miss Nicky Trax)...
Aaah she was so sexy, her voice I mean, would give a lot to meet her!
    ;-)
  • BRUCE1991 over 10 years ago

    @Bomber
Yes Public relation didn't released many tracks but it was top quality, as you said there where a huge new wave-cold wave influence.
Concerning acid, it's a very difficult task because anyone have his own interpretation, there can be also an acid part in a non acid record (mentasm for example) and so on...
I don't know "feel the rhythm", but "casa nostra" rocks just as "acid rock" with this typical Dewulf's rough sound.
I also never heard of "i want to fuck miss nicky trax" well it's an interresting idea; )
  • buchla over 10 years ago

@ Bomber: I totally agree with your opinion about Public Relation: New Beat Mind. Fantastic track. I never understood why Renaat put it on the B-side and not on the A-side.

About Miss Nicky Trax ... well I always wanted to Taste Her Acid Fruit :)
  • tomaz over 10 years ago

my favourite NB records aren't really new beat but more the pop and new wave tracks that were played back
then (some of them at 33rpm+8% for that deep bassy slomo new beat feel).
    Like:
Jerry Harrison - Rev it up
Nitzer Ebb - Let your body learn
    Recoil - excerpt from "stone"
Depeche Mode - Never let me down (aggromix)
    Newcleus - Automan
    Snowy Red - Euroshima
Blancmange - game above my head
    Logic System
    A split second - flesh
    Boytronic - Bryllyant
Vicious Pink - 8:15 to nowhere

    ...
of course the first acid sounds from Phuture, things like Virgo,...

from the records that were conceived as New Beat (and the rave sound that followed) I would pick
    Major Problem - acid queen
    BX-8017 - Take an acid
    Kate B - breadown
Zsa Zsa laboum - something scary
Lords of acid - I sit on acid
Rj's Rule - rave this nation
    Neon - voices
    Fatal Error - fatal error
    ...
  • frankdw over 10 years ago

    Flesh : a split second
    Boytronic : Brilliant
    Were definitely my 2 favourites.
Carlos perron is also one that I still enjoy and even 'Crash course in science' I play today !

New Beat is absolutely about the '(rpm records being played on 33, for which "Flesh - a split second" was one of the first as far as I remember.
Also a bunch from Gent , Belgium...
