Hong Kong is a great place to visit, record shopping isn't one of its major highlights but the odd thing pops up; italo-disco must have been massive here in the 80s.

    HMV
Don't sneer at the HMVs in town. Apart from the regular mainstream genres all of them also have separate "dance" sections where you can always find something of interest. Typical prices; chart toppers go at HKD 100-110, regular CDs at HKD 140-160 and the expensive European imports are around HKD 200-300. Over the years I have picked up quite a number of electronic pearls although with each passing year the selection seems to be tighter and more commercial.

    HMV Central
Located inside the Landmark mall on top of MTR station Central. from exit G, climb the two stairs and move straight through the building and make a U-turn when you come up on the exit on the opposite side. All HMV branches tend to have more or less the same stock, but currently the Central branch is the one with the biggest inventory. For those interested, this shop also has a very wide range of DVDs available.

    HMV Tsim Sha Tsui
Over on the Kowloon side. Take the MTR to -you guessed it- Tsim Sha Tsui and take exit A1 to Beijing Road. Go south just round the corner and enter Beijing Rd, from then on you'll find it on your right hand side at Hankow Road, the second road on the right. Used to be the best of the HMV lot although Central has now surpassed it.

    HMV Causeway Bay
You know the drill by now, exit the MTR at Causeway Bay, exit E Windsor House. Immediately turn left on the busy street and follow it eastwards towards Victoria Park. HMV is in a big mall on the left (next to IKEA) and should be easy to locate. This is the weakest of the three although the three did tend to complement each other fairly well. Often titles would only be available in one of the three shops, so it pays to look around.

There are also branches at Queensway Plaza (MTR: Admiralty), at Telford Plaza (MTR: Kowloon Bay) and Elements (Kowloon Station).

BTW According to the record bag, that Beat Records (節拍唱片) place is on the Ground Floor & The Cockloft (whatever that means), No. 53 Tung Choi St. I think the address recorded above should mention this :)

White Noise has moved. Stumbled across it today. If you want your fix of Finnish Underground Japanese Doom Metal etc. the new address is:

Room 1901, Workingview Commercial Building, 21 Yiu Wa St, Causeway Bay.

It's also the place to go to get gig tickets for the few decent acts that come through.
