This post is hidden because you reported it for abuse. Show this postwhile adding a release i was thinking of adding 'leftfield' as a genre. to me it has an air of 'non-mainstream music,' slightly alternative. but what the heck is it anyway?

adding 'leftfield' as a genre
It's already a style in the dropdown. Why on earth would you want to make a different genre for it? -

This post is hidden because you reported it for abuse. Show this postfor me, "leftfield" is a modifier that indicates a more expansive take on whatever other genres are associated with the release. i would never use it on its own, though possibly for unclassifiable stuff. "experimental" would be even further removed from standard genre expectations, and further onto that i'd say that "leftfield experimental" (or vice versa) is at least slightly redundant. -

i don't know what you mean.
experimental would be also not applicable for my case. thinking about that, every artist seems to be experimenting, in the sense that they are 'exploring' their idea's into something tangible.
so 9228289, i think i can have a smile like you do regarding this matter: unsolved.
but i used it anyway, i suppose it's one of those 'undefineable' genre's to point out an outside mainstream project. -

This post is hidden because you reported it for abuse. Show this postIMHO, leftfield just means slightly difficult to pinpoint. So experimental and leftfield is not redundant, just not specific enough on its own -

Hrvatski was quite leftfield too. -

This post is hidden because you reported it for abuse. Show this postIt's typically used to describe some types of electronic house music; material with a quirky approach, sometimes deconstructionist or humorous, that might not appeal to true fans of house music - but would often appeal to others who would not normally be interested in house. I guess that it is sub-genre hopping as a result.
AMG has a better description of it than that found on here, on http://www.allmusic.com/explore/style/left-field-house-d13172 though it is qualified as "left-field house" music. I've only really seen it used with house music however, though also with more extreme/experimental forms of micro-house than AMG mentions, such as Geeez'n'Gosh, Akufen, and The Rip Off Artist. -

that's how i first encountered it used in piccadilly records here in manchester.... and i think there was a review section in DJ magazine or Jockey Slut called called 'leftfield' as well for odds and ends of things that wouldn't normally be reviewd in a dance magazine, i guess.//
however, from the 'styles' guide:
'Sometimes it is used as a less-alienating alternative for the term Experimental' that's how i've used it the one time i used it in a submission :) -

"Leftfield is a genre inspired by Paul Daley and Neil Barnes, two electronic music pioneers who were the first to fuse house music with dub and reggae. Their desire to ignore the boundaries of genre classifications and experiment with new sounds that were often indefinable in terms of the genre classifications around at the time, led popular UK dance magazines and press to adopt the term Leftfield."
