Great, that's a big deal. In my humble opinion, David Moufang is as important a figure in electronica as anyone working today. He was the most frequent and successful collaborator of Pete's. His Source Records label which has been on ice for 8 years released many of my all-time favorites.

it has info for FAX releases up until May 2005

the wayback machine can be used on namlook.de but press releases from 2012 were not archived.

This is really unfortunate since it had iTunes links for people to purchase music and i figured those purchases would have kept the domain running.
  • little_alien over 4 years ago

  • Kracker over 4 years ago

yeah that's the wayback machine. And all pages from 2012 are missing
  • Kayashi over 4 years ago

Hm, for me - personally - that's just another step in the horrible handling of Pete's legacy over the past months. :(

At this point, it seems Fax is totally disappearing from the web as a whole and there are just single fragments spread over the web.

Anyway - as the URL is "in transit" at the moment, I'm very curious where it'll show up in the future. Hope, it's not another victim of domain-grabbers.

At this point, I really think we'd need to establish something like 2350.org has been. I loved that page back in the days when namlook.de hasn't been up yet.
  • thirdsystem over 4 years ago

Having thought about this more today, I really feel it should have been left online as a tribute to Pete and his momentous lifework. Perhaps there are reasons we know nothing about. I am fairly gutted about it.

I also wish 2350.org had continued to run. I used it so much when I got into FAX, it was invaluable for me. What on earth happened with it ? Might it ever be reactivated ? Is there anywhere else on the net I have failed to find yet that is FAX related ?

    Pretty sad times still.

a quick question on digital fax music... does anyone know of retailers selling fax releases other than itunes, beatport and emusic?

i want to expand my collection as far as possible and although itunes seems to sell most releases i'd rather avoid having the music in different formats if possible...
  • thirdsystem over 4 years ago

    @nick_sonic

I am not aware of any others. In fact I did not know, or had forgotten about, beatport. Quick look there and the albums are considerably cheaper than itunes so cheers for that !! Still a few to get ;-)

Had a quick look about the beatport site but cant find the mp3 bitrate of their downloads, anyone any idea ??
  • nick_sonic over 4 years ago

thanks, i'd had a thorough search and couldn't find any others but it's always worth asking of course.

beatport offers 3 options - 320MP3, WAV and AIFF.

i've downloaded a few releases from emusic since the pricing for some albums seems ridiculously cheap, their bitrate is a bit harder to find out but it seems a relatively high VBR. i used to get a bit hung up on only having the best quality possible but now i'm more interested in obtaining the music since i can't tell the difference between some formats.
  • thirdsystem over 4 years ago

    Cheers nick.

I am happy enough with the 256kbs on itunes, however if beatport are 320 that is great.

Some albums I still need in the £4 - £6 range on there, most albums at £7-8. Very good value indeed compared to £10.99 on itunes.

So I am very grateful that you mentioned this on here. Cheers :-)
  • nick_sonic over 4 years ago

SEPTMXMGBPT will also get you 15% off for the rest of the month :)
  • thirdsystem over 4 years ago

Nice one :-) Between all the releases on Carpe Sonum, ...txt,, Anodize, Psychonavigation and still playing catch up on FAX, I am going to be bust, in fact I think I might be ;-) Every little helps so cheers!!
  • thirdsystem over 4 years ago

Gone for......... From Within 3 and Raumland Exploration .....8-)..........Utter Class !!!!!!!

UK VAT is added onto your purchase so prices were slightly more than initially thought but still very much cheaper than itunes. Had to download each track manually and organise folders manually also. Bit of retagging and artwork sorting out for itunes and then play two of the best possible FAX albums :-).

Will use beatport again, wish there were more of the ones I need on there.

    Thanks again Nick.

Hey guys, Stewart (1/2 of 2350.org) here... I can answer at least the first part of your question- unfortunately, the main server powering the site suffered a catastophic hard drive failure in 2008, and while we had backups of some of the site, much of the most recent work was lost. While I know that Warren was continuing to work on it through 2009, in the end a host of personal issues (my wife and I had a child and moved to a different city than Warren, Warren changed jobs and got married, etc.) contributed to stagnation and ultimately mothballing of the site. Warren was really the driving force behind the back end of the site, having written the code driving the site from scratch in Java, and being one guy he just couldn't devote the time or effort needed to keep it up any more!

As far as the second half of your question, well... I'll talk with Warren and see what can be done to reactivate it. Honestly, the code is probably pretty dated by now and I'd bet that Warren would want to do some major rework on it before offering it up again. Perhaps we can scrape the remaining data and plug it into a new framework somehow. The good news is that even though Discogs has sort of a goofy way of displaying Fax info, it's more or less complete (aside from the reviews that were the mainstay of 2350.org).

    -Stewart
  • Azol over 4 years ago

We can propose two main courses of action: one would be exporting the reviews to corresponding Fax releases on Discogs, second would be recreating the website using some opensource CMS as a framework. This could be easily done - we can elaborate more if you all believe it's worth it. Maybe we all can Kickstart/donate some money to raise funds for hosting new 2350.org or namlook.de if it's now free. Would be nice to see both sites combined into one!
On the other hand, guys here at Discogs may be interested in merging the reviews with the actual releases, enriching the existing content of Discogs.
  • nick_sonic over 4 years ago

Being someone lucky enough to have started listening to Fax close to the beginning I recall how invaluable 2350.org was as a resource. Yes there's Discogs now but it's nowhere near as rich as 2350 was.

Personally I think creating a new version of the site would be a brilliant companion of sorts to Die Welt ist Klang in terms of something concrete that guides listeners old and new through the world of Fax.

I also imagine that there'd be a fair amount of new reviews/material that people would want to contribute too.
  • Azol over 4 years ago

We also must understand that this new website will be more like an encyclopaedia or an archive, even if there will be new reviews to publish. It will require some financing (domain, hosting) and volunteering (fixing bugs, moderating content etc.) Discogs has all of this [for free].
  • nick_sonic over 4 years ago

That's a good summary, we'd need to understand what's required to get it up and running (finance, skills, hours) and regularly maintain it, and if there's a critical mass of people willing to contribute.

I'm happy to offer whatever help I can but there's undoubtedly someone better placed to spec out what's needed to get a new 2350 off the ground.
  • thirdsystem over 4 years ago

thirdsystem edited over 4 years ago
Hi Stewart, thanks very much for coming on and explaining the situation. I emphasise I was so grateful for 2350.org as the info and reviews were essential and vital for my order of FAX purchasing.

It would be great if it continued but as rightly identified it would require work, effort etc. Perhaps the exporting of reviews to discogs would be a good compromise, combined with more reviews of FAX on here. One of the things I found initially was I was buying albums blind on a 30 second sound sample off itunes, which was a bit tricky. Hence how 2350 became so important to me.

It would be a superb tribute to Pete and his music if we could keep something like 2350 going, wherever or whatever form it takes.

    Cheers.

PS I was on 2350 last night deciding which Raumland to get !!!!! :-)

    Autumn Of Communion 1

When Pete passed on, this is the album I had on order from him. I wondered why I had never received it :(. I eventually bought it on download.

This week I have purchased the CD on Amazon. I am playing it now as I type. This is a FAX masterpiece in my view, a special recording for the last ever FAX release.

Having read the note from his daughter that was in with the CD I then read over some of my emails to and from Pete, whilst listening. Still find it difficult to believe Pete's not here anymore.

Really struggling to get a copy of this yet his other Fax releases are readily available.
  • richyhu over 3 years ago

I seem to recall this sold out pretty quickly and there wasn't an AW repress like Machine
Room or 62 Minutes on Mars. I'm guessing there were quite a few Rother fans in addition to Fax regulars who bought this when it came out.
  • jdcapshew over 3 years ago

I think you're right. Pete died a couple of months after this came out so there would never be an AW reissue.
  • Si_Matthews over 3 years ago

Still managed to get The Machine Room and 62 minutes on mars recently both PS label. Fingers crossed some copies appear somewhere or my order randomly turns up
  • richyhu over 3 years ago

I think both this release and 62 Minutes on Mars were very close together as Jeff says. I think 62 Minutes may have sold out even quicker - basically as soon as it went on sale or possibly even before and I think I remember reading something (either in one of Pete's update emails or on Namlook.de) that he did the AW repress of 62 Minutes very soon after the original release because the demand was there.

Vom Urknell Zur Maschine was a collection of tracks from the same period as Simulationszeitalter (hence the Biomechanik remix) which was perhaps also something that helped boost sales among Rother fans as Simulationszeitalter is definitely one of my favorites!

Past couple of months I have managed to acquire all four Ambient Gardener discs. (3 from Michael Zosel btw and excellent prompt service to the UK)

A few of these tracks I did not have. To hear them, and the ones I have, in DTS 5.1 surround sound has been an astonishing experience. It really adds so much to the music and Pete certainly knew what he was doing with this move.

The DTS discs are expensive but more than worth it. I have a few of the other DTS ones but will try to get the lot. Just wonderful.

On my most recent purchase "Autumn" the two tracks that surprised me in DTS were - New Organic Life - Molecular Progression and 4Voice - New York 25.11.2089. For some reason I supected I would not like them prior to listening but wow........just wow..

So many standouts on these four discs. Great stuff.

I have Labyrinth 4and 5 on DTS. No DSOTM yet. Likewise bought a lot of FAX on iTunes at that time due to the cost of the discs. I have been trying to buy my important stuff on disc the past couple of years and have a few now. You should hear Subconscious Worlds in surround .......astounding!!

One thing I have noticed is I can only listen to one DTS disc in a session as it is all enveloping and quite tiring on the ears. Amazing experience though , each and every one. Adds so much to Pete's music, almost like a completely different album form the stereo.

PS I bought "There!" recently. Only heard the CD a couple of times. Can't wait to get the DTS fired up. Might get that on tonight :)

Peter Benisch just announced this on his Facebook page.

This is terrible behaviour for a label!

    https://www.facebook.com/peterbenisch/?fref=nf

Dear reader. I'm really sad to write this. A while back I got an offer from Mr Downey at Psychonavigation Records to re-release an old record I did, Waiting for Snow, originally released on FAX. Since I know a lot of people like it, and that it’s hard to get hold of, I thought it was a great idea.
Also the original label owner, Peter Kuhlmann aka Pete Namlook, died much to young only a few years ago, and I felt it would be a way to honor him and his work aswell through this. So I signed the contract…
However, the preview and design of the material didn’t feel right, so I told Mr Downey I don’t want to pursue this and asked him to cancel the release.
Chockingly, he said he will release it anyway without my further input. I have not sent him any of the orignal audio masters so I cannot wouch for the quality of such a release, even less figure out how it can actually be done.
But should this take place, this is devastating since this is one of my personal favourite albums, originally released by a label that does not exist anymore, and the label manager, a true friend, Is dead.
Just want you to know, that if you should see this release coming in the future - It is against my will, and I have nothing to do with it. I have not delivered any original audio material or had any part of the design.
I just made a mistake of signing a contract of something I thought would benefit everyone, and pay tribute to an old friend.
Thank you for reading. Please share this post.

Am I converting Duetsche Marks incorrectly? Every converter I use has this as a result:

    "7 DEM =3.79997USD"

DM is no longer a currency used in Germany, $ should converted to Euros.

"Deutsche Mark" was completely replaced by Euro over 15 years ago.

    1 € is ~ 1,06 USD

Question about ordering from fututuresoundproduct to the US. I've messaged direct but have not received a response. Could someone take a look at his/her seller's terms to see we interpret it the same? It appears as though 7 € ($4 US) is what is being charged to ship any amount of CDs to the US. Can that be true?

    "DHL,2 € per item within Germany (for CD's),Vinyl 4 €, 5 € europe,5 € rest of the world, Buyer must pay shipping,
for 7 € registered shipping total you can order as many items you want, you never pay more than 7 € shipping total."

Hey, I ordered him once a while back. The 7 Euro shipping is registered. I only ordered one CD so I can't comment on combined shipping. 7 Euro is $7.43 right now according to Google; PayPal may charge a few cents more due to fees.

Thanks! I rarely order outside of the US due to crazy shipping but this rate is a steal if I were to order a dozen or so CDs and his Fax rates look good.
