Deep Londoners around 94-96 will know GirlsFM, a pirate radio station that spawned the likes of Luke Solomon and Kenny Hawkes (remember Space at Bar Rhumba on a Wednesday?!) Played deep house, garage, etc. Some mixes ripped from cassette below, along with other pirate stuff of the same ilk. The Mad Ash ones are deep D&B. There's some quality bobbins in amongst this lot, especially Carl Craig with LS in the Girls studio...

EXTRA SPECIAL THANKS to PinkyChukkles for recording them, and adding some sonic enhancement.

@ truly or others, do you have any stories about that Girls FM radio... how it started/finnished, when, Djs,....? I remember first time I heard it, it was around august 1995 & was driving in London (just moved there at that time)... I kept on listenning for a few months, then it disappeared... wicked music was played there, I remember in particular some big tunes during that summer of 1995:
    - The Beloved - Crystal Wave
    - St Germain - Alabama Blues (Todd Edwards Vocal Mix)
    - Hot Lizard - The Theme (Love From San Francisco Mix)

There you go Njeep! Cheers chip_r.

Qpchan, I was a student in London between 93-96 and was an avid listener to pirate radio, based in South London so a perfect location. AFAIR Girls appeared in mid-94, although it could've been earlier and gone unnoticed by me. Luke Solomon was playing regularly and Kenny Hawkes. They started Space @ Bar Rhumba which was an amazing Wednesday night deep session, and at that time nobody else was really doing that style. I saw Ron Trent there as a guest but the residents rocked it every week.

Loads of DJs played on Girls, apart from the above some I remember were:

    Jackie Nanson
    Keith Fielder
    Matt Lamont
    Dizzy D
    Kenny Carpenter
    Ty Holden

They did some massive parties during those times that were heavily advertised on the station but I didn't make any, they were in North London if I remember correctly.

It disappeared early 96 (or I stopped listening to it). This was the beginning of UK garage and things started speeding up on the station. Interesting to hear the transition over those couple of years. Luke S and Kenny H still played the deep stuff though.

I remember the Girls FM car stickers around London, I'd kill for one of those now!

Pink and others will know stuff about the station too, I'm sure.

EDIT: Googling doesn't reveal too much at all. Surprising, given the popularity at that time.

  • signor_sinistra over 6 years ago

Wow, this stuff takes me waaaay back. Lush as fuck.

Living in SE London about 15 years ago (still here), Girls FM (think it was 94.4 and then 106.6 Hz) was the station my dial was stuck to.

Proper house music, total lack of MC's, ads for parties for "mature" and, i think, "sophisticated" people.

    Brilliant station.

Remember walking out taking my dog for a walk up to Hilly Fields after midnight one night and i heard Girls FM pumping out of two seperate windows on the way to the park (about 200 yards walk). I was sorely tempted to ring their bells and give them props for tuning into Girls.

For a little while there it seemed like true and proper house music was going to take over and run things.

    I'm loving these mixes.

    Nice one truly-madly.

I've got some Girls FM mixes on tape somewhere. If i ever get round to digitising them i'll stick them up here.

  • signor_sinistra over 6 years ago

Jus' reporting back to say that we were steeped in London years ago.

A whole radio station blasting that stuff out.

    Proper, lush house music.

    Hours of it every week.

Jus' loving the mixes - they make me feel so much younger.

I promise to dig out those old tapes.

Don Carlos playing right now - lush as fuck - Ohhhhhh Yeahhhhhh
