    hey laurent,

i'm really keen to speak with you some more about those days. i'd like to expand the piece i wrote for bleep for another site called djhistory. it's the leading site for dance music culture here in england and well respected worldwide. i can't really do it without your input though so if you feel like answering a few questions please let me know. you can contact me via gil or on youtube (i'm davemothersole23 on there). i'm also lazerlegz on here. here's my myaspace also

    http://www.myspace.com/davemothersole

it's a part of dance music culture that it's hugely undocumented and i think it would be great to tell the real story. i'm not a journalist - just a music fan and if you agree i will of course let you proof read everything before it's published online.

    cheers,

    dave

it's so crazy that this is happening. We have the luck to speak to the DJ that probably created, with the clever mixes he made, the roots for the sound that we know as goa trance and that we still love to listen to today.

The circle has really closed and the connection is now global.

Laurent: a big thank you for being the pioneer DJ that made the difference back then. I have heard a lot of stories about how your set were magical from people that were there back then.

    Respect :)!

We will of course all be interested in seeing this video or read anything you will want to share with the community.

The Man who has really Perfect & Exemplary music Taste, no doubts!

Nice to see all these wonderful German (Frankfurt) Trance anthems in your tape tracklists, monsieur Laurent! Incl. LDC, Dance 2 Trance, Komakino...

As well as gorgeous Spanish Techno production from Valencia (Megabeat rec.)! I'm in contact with Julio Nexus from Valencia [the leader of Megabeat/Interfront band], and he's really surprised and positively shocked to know that his music was played even in Goa back in the day! =)

Does your post mean that some of your sacred & legendary tapes are actually survived after the fatal monsoons??...

Happy Full Moon to Master Laurent and to everyone!!

    hey laurent,

thanks for posting the tracklist from that 92 tape - nice surprise to see 'windows' in there - great track.

is there any chance you could post some tracklists from your 80's tapes?

i can still remember the first time i heard you play - not at the party in the church i wrote about in my goa piece (i don't know who the dj was at that one), but at another party a couple of weeks later in chapora fort. must have been early september 86. you played your edit of 'hurts' by boytronic, telex 'moskow diskow', front 242 'commando', 'election day' by arcadia and many many tracks that i didn't know and still don't.

i would love some more info about what you were playing in the 83-86 period.

    all the best,

    dave

    HI Siolaw,
    I have a simple question :
as I see your K7 tracklist I was asking myself how you had the possibility to find such music during your DJ life ?
I mean in Paris music shop at this time it was the case even it could be difficult to find this EP... but in GOA !!!
It's perhaps a very private question but it's really great to have the possibility to ask you the story of all of this.
And thanks to Dave for his great article and mix on bleep43

A probable version of the reason why Laurent skipped his glorious Dj activity in Goa - quoted from 8-Finger Eddie's "GateLessGate Mag" interview, 2008:

"Eddie: Laurent was here, everybody’s favourite DJ was Laurent. He used to make the music go up, you know. Everybody loved Laurent, but then too much sand, too much dust got into his lungs, he couldn’t do it anymore."

    http://gatelessgate.wordpress.com/category/8-finger-eddie/

Indeed, you can see in this exciting Maharashtra party video that Laurent is playing with his head down, often...

Thanks to Dave and Cheers to Gabriel Masurel!!

  • skyhighsi over 6 years ago

just playing through the clips (only interested in 1-3) and the 3rd has had music layered over the film bvut its totally not in keeping with the age of film or time of day - it should be a nice morning tune from that season not some mid 90's middle of the night track. winge over. there is some great high stepping in the film though.

Mr. Ray Castle has kindly identified the correct geographical locations of these previously unpublished GoaPlace vids, - the events where he participated himself:

The first two beach scenes are front of Disco Valley and Baga Beach, he says!

Guy who's name Anders filmed these sacred scenes 8) And it's the first time when they are publicly released!

what a fantastic memory considering how long ago they were filmed. I suppose Disco Valley is very well trodden and therefore identifiable.

BTW the third video at GoaPlace was shot in the "Jungle palace" a legendary party spot at the end of small Vagator (spaghetti beach)... it must be one of the last ones there, as it became too dirty with all the chai shops dropping their garbage there.... :-(
  • genkigroove over 6 years ago

    Hi (Ray Castle) here:
I was at this Jungle Palace party, magical exotic zone at the end of little Vagator (Spaghetti Beach), as Laurent mentioned, and a favourite hang out for backgammon players and chillum, plus lots of Italian drama. Probably was the last season of partying there, because it became full of plastic garbage. That party in the video, which I suspect, Swedish, Anders, shot was probably late March, April '89. Dancers are still relatively fresh, not typical acid, burn out, last-gasp, May heat vibe. The sound system is by Scarlet (Chapora), smaller than Roy's from Mapusa. The sound track on the video is obviously not authentic, more recent. Not the '89 circa sound. The politics with the police, making parties, got more tricky the following season, '90. We had to leave Goa state to make some parties that season. Hey Laurent, hope you are able to salvage your collection of tapes, and especially those unique special edits you made extending/looping/chopping voice. It was maverick space-groove invention for the time. Pity psy trance became so square and generic by the mid to late 90s. Eclecticism and idiosyncratic vibe was the essence of the Goa vibe pre '94, before it all got packaged by trance labels, and the scene went fully global, and should we say – 'commercial'and formularised in style
    Beatific best,
    Ray

    Thanks for the reply Laurent.
It's funny to know that the cutting edge of electronic undeground sounds from 80's was played in GOA without moving from there !!!... and interesting for the knowledge of this story.

    Hi Ray!
Never mind about the cuts... if these were real good tracks, there would be no need to cut the BS out of them!
I had to laugh (in a nice way!) when i read your expert and acute analysis of the dancers! You are probably right! Relatively fresh dancers and all that! BTW I highly suspect I was playing at that party....
Anyway, how are you? still in Japan or something? i spent August and September in Goa, nobody there and continuous rain! I am in Bangkok now...

great list, many alltime classics, surprising how there are a few spanish tracks (Chimo Bayo's omni praesentia).

looking that you included a hard to find record like Confocation, just for curiosity do you remember if the next tracks were played in Goa?

    Zerocks - You Too
Scene (2) - The Future Of Music
    BMQ* - Dance Robot
    Espiral - Dunne

    more international:
    E-Rection - Suck My Dang-A-Long

I understand why you're a legend by playing such a selection of sounds in Goa and why people keep so strong feelings from there !

Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science and Moev - Capital Heaven !
FGTH "Welcome to the pleasure Dome" must has been something very powerfull in such a Goa contest.

One of my favourite - Eden Transmission - I'm So High
    Thanks to share this.

Further reflections on the evolution of Goa style parties:
The 80s techno/acid house/neu beat/electronic body music was less than 130 bpm. For dancers, that bpm speed gave more space for expressive movement. Once you go up to 140 bpm and over, the kick/bass dynamic locks everything down, so that dancers get into this marching, robotic, style of response.
Real psy is beyond genre. The unique aspect about that late 80s collision of styles, which made it very interesting, was its pluralistic diversity. Each track had narrative personality and character. Goa, 80s-94, wasn't driven by labels and music industry. Travelers and collectors exchanged music. The best tracks distilled down over the party season and played in the parties by discerning DJs, and often, by not so cogent DJs.
Laurent had the sharpest perception of which music cut it for the emerging Goa atmos-logos, drawing from access to the most discerning collector sources. These sound nuggets he was able to weave, using tape player decks, into seamless, empowering, marathon mosaic mixes for tripped out dancers. This was truly beyond any typical disco or night club story.
These days, DJ/producers easily get locked into on narrow bandwidth of style, absolutely generic. Everything has to be homogeneous, fit into the label or fashion or category agenda, for marketing.
One other point about Goa parties, late 80s/early 90s speaker stakes were predominantly set up in a circle formation so that dancers were not just facing a DJ on a stage with typical two speaker stacks flanking. Dancers moved around the dance floor 360 degree, interactively, holophonic, circular, within jungle/palm tree fields of sound. The DJ presence in the party was secondary, almost hidden, obscure. This was not celeb idolatry music biz. It was luminous, participatory, transpersonal, communal. Underground in an exceptionally, exotic, obtuse, mystical dance dharma zone, where cows would appear within the dusty gusto of dance floor ignition frenzy frequency feasts.
When the parties went beyond 300-500 peeps the whole dynamic changed. The'trance'genre party fashion wave, by the end of the 90s, had become like rock n roll with DJs and live acts putting on a show, with a dancing audience facing all the same direction.

I would just like to thank you both, Laurent and Ray, for taking the time to participate in this discussion and laying down some history for us regarding the "early days". It's truly appreciated by those of us who weren't there at the time, but have since come to love the music that was spawned from those days. This quote, Ray, is the at the heart of what I feel to be most importantly lost in the minds and sounds of today's "psychedelic" trance:

    "Real psy is beyond genre."

What I find interesting, too, is that *my* timeline for when things 'went sour' is later than yours, and I expect it to be due to my coming later to the game, circa late '96. The sound had already long-since homogenized into music that could be labeled as "Goa trance", which thereby ceased to be free-form enough to be truly surprising to those who'd already been there and done that (partied in Goa) for years.

For folks like me, however, who were "late-bloomers", this early Goa trance-labeled music is where the sounds gel'ed in a way so as to become the music for which we'd always been searching. For me, I feel the music from '94-'98 was so much more varied, expressive, and genre-blurring than later releases, but that's likely because it's near the time I found the music. And by that time, for you, it had already become same-y, stale.

The speaker-stacks-in-a-circle, non-DJ-centric party - oh how I'd love to experience that. I've contemplated putting a 12-hour mix together and throwing a party without a DJ at all...I wonder if people could handle it, or even know what to do? :)

Laurent, with your permission I'd love to include a mix of yours from the late 80's/early 90's in a History Of Goa Trance mix series I'm planning for the Goat Ranch. If you are open to it, I'd be honored. Such a history would not be complete without a contribution from you.

And Gabriel, thank YOU for some of the most beautiful tracks from those early years. Absolutely fantastic.

    fanboy mode off

Non DJ Centric partys wow, i remember one party looking for where the djs were, spent ages wondering where they was, but also totally non plus about finding them, the emphasis was on the music and not some djs on a podium, fantastic, i remember joking with my friends about there being no visible dj,s, and in the end i spotted 2 guys with 3 professional walkmans sitting on a rock with a little mixer doing their thing, they just looked like 2 guys making a chillum and nothing else, but i then realised that these were indeed the djs and that they were for sure making the party, and a chillum, lol brilliant full on multitasking at its best..

This thread is really making dance music history! Thank you Laurent, Ray Castle, Nick Melton, Dave Mothersole, adaracd, Fiasko1, Skyhighsi, 303, Eugene.ru, and everyone else for your great input!

And finally a dream have been fulfilled..

A thousand thanks again to Laurent for the amazing list! I'm sure there will be a lot of fantastic new (old) musical finds here.

Also nice to see so much of personal and others research into this vibe of music being confirmed. Yes, track xx by xx actually was an anthem in goa etc.. (and not just in your own mind.)

Now I'm off to youtube this list for the next couple of days.. 8-D

Ps. To Laurent, Ray, Dave the rest of you original goa people. you should get together and write a book about these times, I can sense there are some wild and amazing stories that urges to be told! :)

turn your back for a few days and BAM! Laurent, thanks for the time and effort of sharing such a large list of magical music - looks like a few expensive months coming up buying some of this vinyl.
how amazing is this thread. share a video i had stashed for over 20 years with my friend Adara in israel in order to get a few track names out of it then word spreads, i bump into my old chum Nick in spain then (in a cyber fashion) then out of nowhere (possibly through Gil) the holy grail - Laurent, the legendary dj in the video, who is still in goa graces us with his presence.
i am truly amazed that about 20 years on from standing on that beach that i have the opportunity to discuss the music and times with so many speacial people. thankyou all for keeping it all so special.

by the by, i can recommend this thread http://www.discogs.com/groups/topic/155580 highly (thanks to JeanMarc). i have only listened to first 7 but many many great new beat tracks (lots from Laurents list) nicely put together. lets dance.

dont waste your time. of course having 'non dj centric' parties are as it should be but are you suggesting that the work of a dj is just to slap on any old tracks at any old time. a dj works the crowd feeding off the atmosphere and vibe - they just dont need to be on a podium with everyone facing them like Gods. Saying that though, and with ALL DUE RESPECT, look how we a treating Laurent!? He is on a podium now.

atleast in our hearts, as he should well be !
  • Meltdown23 over 6 years ago

As much as Laurent is finally now getting the spotlight he deserves, i think its important not to forget and understand the crucial role the Dj plays in creating the setting and vibe of the party, whilst also acknowledging the most important factor is what music is being played, and of course the people. i know what the guy means about a dj less party! but thats more to do with how big the dj ego's have become but get real, we need a dj, i personally am not a dj watcher, i prefer to use my ears and legs to appreciate them.. And simon!!! my name is schultz!!! top banana my old baba, top thread and as Treetribe said the dude is in our heart mind and feet.
